This forum is for the new grad RN Residency Program starting in Sept 2013, at Swedish Medical Center, in Seattle, WA.

Sorry I can't PM. Site won't let me.

AIR25 you can PM your email if you want but I really don't have additional info. I just got the offer by email on the 10. Good luck to you though and congrats!

Hi sapi! I will be applying for Swedish's RN Residency this fall and hope to be starting in January. The Neonatal ICU is my number 1 unit of interest. I was wondering if we could chat about your experience with interview and what type of experience you have that helped you get the position. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just applied for the January cohort, when should I expect to hear anything? I have been checking the site daily and all it says is application received.

Applications are going to be accepted up until Nov 1, so you might not hear anything for a while.

ccb1, are you currently in the Swedish residency program? If so would you mind if I asked you some questions that I have about the program?

Hello there everyone! I am a new RN grad from Seattle and had just applied to the Jan 2014 Swedish RN residency and got a call for a phone interview. I was hoping to see if any of you who have went through this process can tell me what kinds of questions they asked. I'm not very good with interviews and I hope to be as prepared as possible!! So nerve wracking!!! Thanks in advance my fellow nurses :)

Hello everyone. I've got a phone screening interview lined up and I got an email with the campuses and units we can make as our choices. I have a few questions for folks who have already gone through the process.

First, are the two choices for all campuses or would we be able to select two choices per campus?

Second, would anyone provide some information about the different campuses. I am from California and have limited knowledge about each. Any input would be appreciated.

RN013,

I am from the Seattle area, so I know about the different locations. However, I don't know specifically how the campuses differ. The first hill campus is downtown, Ballard is very close to downtown, Edmonds is north of Seattle a bit and is in the suburbs, Issaquah is east of Seattle off of I-90 and could be considered suburbs as well. When looking on google maps the locations all look generally close to each other, and they are, but factor in traffic and it can make a huge difference. What type of nursing do you want to do? What unit would you love to be on?

MontanaRed,

Thanks for the response. I am actually interested in Critical Care so I would like to go into an ICU, Intermediate ICU or PCU/Step Down. I'm unsure which campus I should focus my preferences.

I believe I was asked to specify which type of unit, not which campus. If you have a specific campus preference I think you could let them know, but I'm not sure if they can take that into consideration when setting up interviews. It might also narrow your chances. They place residents based on anticipated hiring need, so it is impossible for me to say which units are going to need staff. In our cohort there are residents in L&D, ED, NICU, ICU/IMC, Tele, Med/Surg and one in addiction/recovery. Might be a few others, but those are the majority. We have no peds, no psych, no OR and no PACU as far as I can remember, but that doesn't mean there won't be next time around. There are 40 of us total, but I was told they anticipate hiring up to 60 in January.

First Hill/Cherry Hill are close to each other downtown and are the larger campuses. They have the most residents by far in the Sept cohort. There are a handful at Ballard, just one in Issaquah, none in Edmonds. Edmonds is kind of separate entity in some ways, so I'm not sure if residents ever get placed there. Ballard doesn't have an ICU. Issaquah is ~25 min from downtown without traffic; with traffic who knows.

As far as questions for the phone interview, I recall there being very basic nursing HR questions: why do you want to be a nurse? what qualities should a nurse have? etc. I found having talking points prepared helpful and practicing with the career counselor at my school.

ccb1,

Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping it'll be the case that I can just say my units of preference and not units and location since I'm not picky about where I land.
