Survived my first shift as an LVN!

Whoa! I could barely sleep night before last, I was excited, nervous, everything! LOL! Just as I woke up to get ready my oldest daughter started vomiting. Not a good sign! She had what I thought was a stomach bug Friday but was fine in the afternoon and all day Saturday, so this was NOT a good thing for me to go off to work worrying about!

It was totally surreal because I have been working on the same floor for nearly 3 years as a Nursing Assistant. So to walk on the floor as an LVN was so strange! My preceptor is awesome. We had a very good day. She said that the first few days we would just work together, however there was one patient, a 21 year old young man, who seemed to be comfy with me. So I took care of him except for the IV piggy backs. I even got to give report on him to the oncoming nurse. At one point I stopped and looked around to see all the nurses I have worked with just smiling. My preceptor said I did just fine!

All in all it went pretty good. I got to hang blood (Yes I am IV certified!) I gave all the PO meds on all 5 patients and by mid shift I had access to the accu dose. It was SO WIERD going in and getting meds myself! In nursing school we always had to ask someone! So to be able to just do it was nice!

I will be on orientation for at least 8 weeks!

I am in the same position, doing my orientation right now. Friday I actually got to have my own patients, with an RN overseeing me. She said I did great! I do have to say she is a great preceptor, I was scared considering alot of people's experiences with preceptors.

As I was leaving Friday my DON stopped me and told me she had heard great things about me...I was on cloud 9 the rest of the day!
