Support group for CRNE June 2011

World Canada CRNE

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

This thread has gone off the rails. It is NOT about IENs, immigration, temporary work permits, permanent residency or any other related issues. Those posts belong int he International Forum. This is a support thread for people taking the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination, the vast majority of whom are not IENs. Please keep this thread on topic or it will be closed.

In response to TazJ's complaint about not receiving any response to a post in the International Forum, please bear in mind that this is NOT a chatroom and instant gratification is not a realistic expectation. The people who can answer the questions posed may not visit the site today, or even tomorrow. If waiting a couple of days for a reply is too long, perhaps you've waited too long to ask your questions.

@janfrn:

My apologies for mentioning IENs and the SEC/CCA. The only reason I asked on here was because several people in earlier posts specifically stated they were IENs who are currently studying for the CRNE. Since they are new IENs, I assume they would have taken the SEC/CCA recently. I only asked here because I know they'll be getting updates to this thread and might not look at the International forum. I only posted on here as a side note to thanking the people who actually provided useful information for studying for CRNE.

I am not stupid, I know this is NOT a chatroom - I first asked for advice regarding the SEC/CCA a week ago in the International Forum and didn't get any helpful responses (more like criticism from Canadian RNs) so I had to redefine my question yesterday - you probably only saw that one and assume I'm expecting instant gratification. I still have a few weeks so I haven't left it too late to ask.

You have the ability to send private messages. Crystalpearl has the ability to receive PMs but not to send them. What's the problem?

This is off-topic.

You may want to be very cautious about CNE if you think it's "superficial or easy".

Yes the focus of the exam is different from what you see in NCLEX but the exam by itself is not easy by any measure. As you said the questions are sometimes vague as well as answers and MOST of the time you'll find more than one correct answer for the questions. Considering that you only have a minute and bit to read, digest and answer the questions which most of the time are longer any of those questions you see in Mosby or any other prep books, the only thing that can help you to pass the exam is a good understanding of the concepts of nursing and time management. Yes we get a lot of psych. and community questions but those are the questions the actually get you and you leave the exam doubting yourself whether you passed it or not. My advise to those of you who write the exam is if you don't want to cry while sitting in it, take it seriously.

You NEED to know your stuff and you NEED to stay focus and as it was said by other members earlier, time management is big in pass and fail of CNE.

Akardan,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to say it IS superficial or easy, I meant to say it LOOKS easy from a superficial perspective (as in from a distant glance). I am definitely taking the CRNE and the CCA VERY seriously and I don't expect to pass simply because I have passed the NCLEX. They are clearly two different exams. I'm used to choosing between multiple correct answers so taking the NCLEX helps in that perspective. I know people say the content on NCLEX is "harder" but as you mention these vague questions can be very tricky and interpreted in different ways. Personally I would consider the CRNE questions to be harder than NCLEX in that respect!

Oh no. And I didn't mean to scare you off from the exam by any means. It is just my experience that many students including myself thought that CNE was/is easy because it is all about "feely touchy and psych." stuff. While you'll get those questions, they are actually the hardest, in my opinion, to answer.

I wrote ncelx and passed it as well. Just remember this when preparing yourself for the CNE. The questions and case studies are much longer and take you more time to read than those in NCLEX. I think it was janfrn, our stuff, if I recall it correctly once said that CNE in a sense

check your abilit of reading and comprehension as well. So just try to stay focuse throughout the exam and read the questions carefully while watching for time and you'll be fine. And try your best to finish the exam on time.

No I know you don't mean to scare me, and you raise some valid points. I think there's a false sense of security when I first looked at CRNE questions because they didn't look too hard compared to what I was used to. I definitely agree that those vague and psychosocial questions are harder to answer than the concrete patho/med questions. I'm glad you brought up time management because that's something I'll be working on this week - I don't know whether time management is an issue on the CCA but just in case! I'll definitely keep your advice in mind when studying for the CRNE as well!
