Support group for CRNE June 2011

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

I called CNO today asking about the temporary license and they said they will mail the results sometime next week; this is for Ontario.

"Is passing this exam a reflection of a person fit for practice? Is it unreasonable to think a better solution would be to guide universities and allow them to state a student is fit to practice as an RN? Surely it could be at least considered that the competencies required to be a nurse could be assessed during one's university life with proper performance appraisals and correct clinical support. People may say the current system is there to "protect the public", but can we not do that without putting nursing students (most who are very young adults) through the current system? Are we protecting nurses?"

Just a thought in response to you 100CPZ: I am an IEN educated in the UK. For us our nursing degree takes 3 years (with literally no time off in those 3 years!!) Our final exam is done in a clinical setting where we are required to manage the ward/ team for the day. I personally sat my OSCE (Observed Structured Clinical Exam) on a visiting nurse team and had to demonstrate competency in a variety of categories including handover, medications, nursing skills etc

I personally found this a LOT easier than sitting a multiple choice exam where the questions involve a lot of grey areas and are open to interpretation. The OSCE placement takes place over 10 weeks, during which time I was continually assessed and given points to improve upon in preparation for the final exam.

Throughout the 3 years each placement was assessed and marked against a set level of competencies, if you failed a placement you had 2 weeks of the next placement to pass the competencies you failed on or you were off the course. The final placement focused on the OSCE and allowed me to feel confident managing a case load and delegating to other staff members.

A multiple choice exam is how it is done here, and I am a little worried because I am not so good at written exams, I am affected by stress in these, whereas in a practical situation I can deal with the stress better.

Good luck to all waiting and I hope we hear soon!!!!

I meant to add that the sign off mentor ( a nurse who takes a special course in order to be able to assess a student's fitness to practise) is assigned to each student taking their OSCE, in signing the exam form that gets sent to the UK nursing body the nurse is stating that the student is fit to practise as an entry level nurse

The student can therefore apply for their license.

honestly i think i like the UK system better it actually reflect true competencies and determine if you are fit to actually practice

ughhhh... just reading all these posts are making me nervous. I agree.. sometimes I can't believe after four years in University, this ONE exam has my whole nursing career riding on it.. I have never failed one exam in nursing, and I very well could have failed this CRNE.. that exam was ODD. That's all I gotta say. Too bad I'm going up North on vaca next week... I told my parents if I get mail from the CNO and it's in a brown envelope, DON'T open it and call me. Or, just don't call me to tell me I have mail.

Best wishes to everyone!!

I though either pass or fail the envelopes are the same, it's just the thickness that matters... Well anyhow, have fun on your vacation and best of luck!

Good idea lol. I'm not counting on receiving it this week or the next.

Hi all, received my result from Nova Scotia yesterday by email (because I live outside of Canada). I passed and I am so soooooooooooooooooooo delighted. Its my 1st attempt and I could barely breath after the exam. But I thank God for blessing my efforts. NS results are out in the mail already, so people should check mailboxes from today. A colleague who studied with me passed too.

Wishing all of you good luck.
