Support group for CRNE June 2011

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

According to the letter that I have it says that results will be mailed within 6 weeks, so my interpretation of that is that they have to mail them by the 13th July at the latest, and then who knows how long they will take in the postal system!!

I wish we could call up and find out especially with the resit submission date being so close, I believe it's the 23rd July! Argh!

It's usually 5-10 BUSINESS days. Therefore, weekends do not count. I know, it kills me, lol.

27400 it's beyond killing me!!!!!!!!!! Just wish that there was a better system so that we could all get on with our lives minus all the waiting around and hoping!

Well maybe I am wrong but I saw that Manitoba has their own college of nurses and they submit their results within 48 hours??? If they can do it why can't the CNO??? I'm getting an ulcer just worrying about this!

I know I can't convince you from not worrying about it but you'll be worrying yourself to sleep for the next 2-3 weeks. Each college of nurses is different and we have to take the amount of people who wrote the exam in each province into account. Ontario is heavily populated than some other provinces/territories. Therefore, it is going to take longer for them to organize our results. It's summer! Go enjoy the weather! =)

It's such a strange thing all this waiting for exam results. I have officially been cool as a cucumber. I managed to get it into my head that the results would definately not be out until 2nd/3rd week in July (possibly later as the postal service in my area is particulary awful) and have really not given it that much thought. THEN....I read one snippet suggesting that the NS results might have been posted and I have officially turned into an adrenaline producing jibbering wreck! I only have to think about opening that stupid envelope and I can induce tears of euphoria/devastation/relief/joy (depending on which particular fantasy is haunting me at that moment!) Our post lady is a bit tempramental at the best of times. She does not always make it to our mail boxes (at the end of the route and coffee is calling I imagine!) We generally only get mail 3 times a week. Maybe I will have to strategically plant a Tims on top of the mail boxes as a lure! Ho hum! Will just have to try to 'keep my head' a little longer, and spare a thought for all you guys in Ontario who it seems may have the longest wait! Congratulations to all who have passed so far. and good luck to everyone else!!

Again, this may be an extension from my previous post but I think awareness needs to continue;

How is this day and age can it take so long for an exam you pay a lot of money for so long to mark and process? I have asked before and I'll ask again, how does a 200 multiple choice question take 6 weeks to process??? The score is marked on a computer, we put patient records into computers, a high percentage of people have or have access to a computer..... is there not a way a system can be set up where students can securely obtain their result to allow them a result within a week or two? I personally would pay extra to get the result much sooner (is the exam fee already not a large fee?). Even if official registration papers took 6 weeks to come, at least I could plan my life for the coming months... could not others do the same?

Ontario always takes longer because of the number of applicants. The exam results take 6 weeks because you are not writing a computerized exam like the NCLEX. The exams are processed by the CNA first, and then the results are given to the CNO to be processed. After that, the letters are sent out. All of this takes time. By July 18th or so, you should have your results. Try to keep occupied until then.

I am an IEN and have license to practice in USA with 13 years of experience as an RN. I just passed the crne and I wrote it on The Rock, Newfoundland:)

I agree with the comments made earlier that the crne is just horrible and other ways can make this experience less stressful and more realistic and practical . It feels that we still live in the dark ages here in Canada.

The crne in its current format does not really speak to nursing practice. Some of the questions were not at all realistic and does not measure what it intends to do.

Despite being happy that I passed this monster of an exam, I think I am so angry:madface::madface::madface: because it took its toll on my mental health. I truely felt the pain that everyone expressed on this Support Group, reading every post. Now, that I can move on with my life, after it had stalled for quite a bit, I wish all of us here the best by passing.

I can aslo ask all future nurses here now or those who will read this post in the future to truly work on lobbying the CNA to ease the pain of future generation nurses by making this experience less stressful and more realistic and practical. I am saying this because I know that all of us here will become the voice for those who do not have a voice.

Best wishes everyone!!

Hi, I am also an IEN in NL. Have been pretty relaxed so far waiting for results until I found that two of the other girls from here failed. They heard yesterday via recorded delivery, however I am still waiting with an empty mailbox!!! Shall be camping outside the Post Office tomorrow! Here is hoping that no news is good news but having found the exam pretty hard going despite having 11 years experience as an RN in the UK, I am very nervous now and not at all confident! I too agree that the 5 week wait for a computer generated examination is far too long though and does cause result in additional stress for some people, so I support all moves to try and get the time-frame reduced. I see a sleepless night ahead!

I always picture the exam results being sent by horseback across the country:) It's how I make sense of the 7 week delay

Every province has its own College. But as joanna73 explained, the exams are marked in Ottawa by the Canadian Nurses' Association, the national regulatory body. The results are then despatched to each province's College where the results are recorded by the College and notification letters are printed and mailed. Manitoba graduates about 1/10th the number of new nurses that Ontario does and therefore their process will take far less time to complete. The results must all be ready for mailing before any are mailed. That's a CNA rule.

The cost of setting up something like you've suggested would be prohibitive and those costs would be passed on to those who are already RNs through increased registration fees. The exam fee is set by the province and it includes the cost of administering the exam, marking, collating and notification, plus paying someone to answer the phone for the hundreds of people who call from the end of the fourth week three times a year wanting to know when their results are coming. This is the system, imperfect as it is. In the US where they have at least 100 times the people writing their exams and their health care system is also very different, they've developed their privately-owned and operated NCLEX system over time and given the economy of scale, it cost very little to the individual. That would not be the case here. No one forced you to go into nursing and no one is forcing you to take the exam. If you want to work, you do what you must. By all means, lobby the CNA to work toward changing how it's done, but be prepared to pay for it.
