SUNY Downstate ABSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi All!

I wanted to start this thread to create some conversation about our application to SUNY Downstate's ABSN program beginning Summer 2013. I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the program and I would like us all to share some of our thoughts! Do any of you have a Bachelor's already? If so what is it in? Where did you take your pre reqs and stuff? What are some of your grades? I took all of my pre-reqs at Suffolk Community College. I received an A in A&P I & II (incl labs), Microbio (incl lab), Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, Developmental Psych, Group Theory/Social Psychology, & English I. I received a B+ in Chemistry and English II. My TEAS V scores are Reading: 91 and Math: 87. I also have my BA from Stony Brook University. Also, I applied to SB last year and did not get accepted to there program. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with Downstate and I do not know what more a prospective student can do! If there are any recent grads of the ABSN program out there please give a shout out! Any advice or opinions will help! Good luck everyone and hopefully we will all be together in the summer!!!!

Specializes in surgical, geriatrics.

Yeah, I just noticed there's no way to pay the deposit on mine online portion. OH WELL, back to the drawing board!

To those accepted, did you all have a link to pay the deposit or it just says deposit too? I don't have a link just a list of things to complete. Hopefully I get good news in a few days. Now that I found out it saying deposit doesn't necessarily mean I'm in, I'm nervous....

WAITLISTED! (sad trombone) Yep, the letter was there when I got home. I did a little research and it seems like some years a fair number of people make it and some years it's only a few. How do they pick from the waitlist--are people already ranked, is there a lottery? Is it worthwhile to keep on top of them for status updates or is that all she wrote.

Trying not to take it too hard, already have an yes from Phillips Beth Israel, an interview at Wagner and Molloy and waiting on Pace. Good luck to the rest of you and congrats.

The good thing is you already have a yes somewhere, so congrats on that! Good luck with the rest of the schools as well! :)

Let's get a Facebook group started since the other ones not working. Nothing special on there yet but we can use it to say hi to everyone for now. https://m.facebook.com/groups/485039051549721

Oh great, waitlisted too... I got so excited hearing some of you getting acceptances after seeing what I saw online. But after hearing from two of you that you got waitlisted I got discouraged. It's also great that we were the last ones to find out so we're probably way down on the list..

They probably sent out all the waitlist letters at the same time so who knows the order in which we are on the list. Try and stay positive though.

When I was wait listed last year, the admissions office told me that there is no order or priority to the wait list. As space becomes available, they review the folks on the list and select them one by one.

They also told me that there are 60 people on the wait list and 40 slots in the program. In some years, they said that as many as 15 people get off the wait list, sometimes just days before the program begins in June. Hang in there.....

Brooklyn gal...........

Hey everyone. So I used to go on the thread for last years accelerated nursing program for info and Im a current student in the program now, graduating in August. Congrats to everyone who got accepted and for those who were wait listed, thats ok too. One of the ppl in the program was wait listed, and she was called like...2 days before and was told she was in. Had to get her vaccinations and everything the day before lol. At orientation youll definitely meet a lot of us, and also some of us have books were desperately trying to sell lol. Sooo some stuff about the program. That summer coming in was pretty brutal. It wasnt so much the difficulty (although it is difficult) it was more that in the summers they piled us on with classes, and we were on campus all 5 week days. They strongly advise you not to work during the program but...I did lol. That first summer though I was only working Sundays and even that felt like too much. The good thing is you get to know eachother really quickly cuz youre always together. Come September though and its like youre on campus for class one day and you have clinicals thursday and friday...you start to miss eachother lol. The good news is a lot of people worked during this time. Clinicals are where you learn the most about nursing, so do your best there. Independent study is also important for potential jobs and making contacts in the hospitals. So far were all nervous about finding jobs but a few people have started volunteering and applying for internships. Aaand thats all Ive got for now lol. My advice: survive the summer and youre golden lol. If you guys have any qustions let me know! Hope to meet you all soon!

Thanks so much for posting Dee,

The summer does look very intensive.

I sure hope that the teaching quality is good..we will spend a lot of time in class in a short time period.

Hi folks!

Wondering if anyone knows what the process if for registering for classes. Someone mentioned it will be on April 22nd, but I haven't heard a word from SUNY on this. Thanks!

I got a call from SUNY yesterday saying to look out for an e-mail (that is supposed to come today) describing the course selection process. We will begin to sign up for classes on April 22. That is what I know for now.

I had a look at the class schedule for 2012, and in the first summer session, you are in class every day but Tuesday from 9-5 or 6:30 PM. It is very intensive. I am worried about having enough time to study and complete assignments! Tuesday is a short day, class was only held from 9-1.

look out for that e-mail today....
