Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello, has anyone else on this site been accepted into Sumner College's RN program in Portland, OR? I would love to get to know everyone since we can't meet for at least 4 weeks most likely! Excited to get to know you all! I'm also thrilled to start next week ?

Hi again! I think if they say you are in review, it means you most likely got a panel interview. Shortly after they sent me an email saying I was in review, I got contacted to schedule my panel review. I had 8/10 points before the interview, and the interview is 5 points. You need to get 12/15 as you probably know. I would say it sounds like you have an interview, and as long as you do good you will get in. Just be prepared to answer questions related to your experience. You mentioned earlier that you are in the medical field, so focus on specific examples. I actually wrote down examples and re-read them before the interview. There were questions like:

- Why nursing?

-What do you do in a conflict with a coworker?

-How has you experience prepared you for school?

- What are some of your biggest life accomplishments?

- What have been some of your challenges along the way?

ect., I wrote down patient care examples and strengths/weaknesses. The interview was easier than I anticipated because I wrote down my examples prior.
And yeah I don’t mind if we do that.

Sounds like your going for the ADN program however, not sure if your aware but according to the Sumner academic calendar the August start is for the LPN program and the new RN-BSN program they just rolled out, the next ADN start is the beginning of November.

I actually just heard back yesterday, and I now have a panel interview in about a week for the ADN august start date as well as the person above. They had told me in very late May that they opened June and August for also the ADN, as I also had no clue about this start date till about a month ago haha.

Hi there,

I am looking into applying to the RN program at Summer but would like some feedback from the current or past students. Where were the clinical sites and did you feel like you got a lot of experience in acute care? Also, where did students get hired? I am not interested in working in a clinical setting and only want to work in acute care. All the feedback would be much appreciated.

Since I am only going into my second term, I can’t really answer that question because I’m unsure of what’s going to happen because of covid. I am also mainly interested in acute, but for my area I know I won’t get a job in it right away because most hospitals in Oregon require your BSN. I plan on getting my BSN after sumner. This would be a great question for @OliveOyl91 . I’m also curious about this.

Thanks for the tag! Cohort 9 grad here!

I am currently working at a PeaceHealth hospital with my ADN. I have classmates from my cohort who are working at Providence with their ADN. Legacy, Kaiser, and OHSU definitely want BSN-prepared nurses. Not quite sure about Adventist. Classmates are also working at hospitals on the coast, hospitals in Olympia, the Oregon State Hospital, care facilities like Prestige, and local jails.

I’m doing the online RN-BSN through Chamberlain and the transition was super easy. I graduated in September, did the NCLEX in October, and was starting BSN classes in November. For clinicals during this time of COVID, they have a limited number of students attending at a time and they’re spreading them out around the hospital. We used to get three or four nursing students on our floor at a time, but now it’s only one at a time.

What I really liked about Sumner was that we started in long term care and worked our way up to clinicals at the hospital. At work, we sometimes see nursing students in their first quarter and they look terrified. They don’t have the knowledge or experience to really benefit from what they’re seeing and doing, in my opinion.

We didn’t have clinical during our first term, that way anyone new to the medical field could get a jump on their fundamentals. Our second term we were in a locked memory care facility that was along the lines of assisted living. Third and fourth terms we were in a SNF (long term care/rehab). Fifth and sixth term we were in a hospital. The seventh term was busy, because we had another round of hospital clinicals, but we also had clinicals at a mother/baby clinic for maternal nursing. Eighth term was at the Oregon State Hospital for our psych nursing clinicals. Finally, term nine was 120 hours of clinical practicum at an approved facility of your choosing. I did mine at the hospital I worked at as a CNA and wound up greasing enough wheels to get into their RN residency after graduation. ☺️

The Portland/Vancouver area is really saturated with nursing programs. The farthest north we had to travel for clinical was Olympia, and the farthest south was Salem.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask me any questions! ❤️

I’m in the cohort that started this June (17)! I’m actually sooo excited that you responded to this because I have stalked your profile for almost a year and you actually helped me decide on applying for sumner. I love it so far, despite the online hiccups! So thanks for that ☺️ I currently work for legacy as an aid and I’m alittle bummed I can’t apply there as an internal candidate for their RN residency. I am even considering trying to get a CNA job at Providence or Vancouver PeaceHealth for an increased chance at getting into a hospital, because I did SNF CNA work for 3 years out of my 6 years as an aid and don’t really want to do it again (though I will if needed for experience, no problem). I also worked at Adventist for a year and think they hire adns! Thanks for the clinical info, I start my 2nd term in two weeks and I don’t even think we are going to do any in person clinicals because of covid ? sounds like we are doing virtual simulations instead. Makes me feel nervous for my classmates that have zero healthcare experience.

@Shelle I had a classmate who worked for Legacy for several years and all through the nursing program. Right before we graduated they changed their policy regarding ADNs. They used to allow internal applicants to apply with their ADN with the condition that they complete their BSN in three years. She was devastated.

I work at PeaceHealth Southwest and have classmates working at both PeaceHealth St John and Sacred Heart, as well. A few classmates are working at Providence St Vincent, Portland, and Centralia. A few of the “random hospitals” include Capital Medical Center in Olympia, Columbia Memorial in Astoria, Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, and Oregon State Hospital in Salem.

Like any other nursing program, it had its bumps along the way, but in the end I felt like it was a solid nursing program and that I was prepared for the NCLEX and working as a RN. I wish the best of luck to every one going to school during these strange times!

There is a lot of good information in this thread. I was curious as to how COVID is effecting this school and had all my questions answered. I submitted my application recently for the 2/2021 start date and am now in review. Hopefully all goes as planned and I will be back in school early next year.

very informative thread.    Am thinking of joining Sumner and was wondering how about the schedule for RN classes is.  I cant afford not to work fulltime.  Also, what is the cost for the program and how vigorous is it.  TIA

The schedule varies slightly term to term. Mostly, I've had a couple classes Tues/Wed, and labs on Fri. But you have to be prepared for them to change it slightly. Plenty of people in my group work still, including myself. Your best bet would be working on the weekends, which is what I do. It can be tiring at times, but manageable. Especially if you have prerequisites done, which I should also note has lessened my class load. Because I had all my prereqs done at PCC, the program is costing me a little over $30k. It's more if you don't transfer in classes. It's worth it to me though because I got tired of waiting to be accepted at a community college. Hope this helps.
