Summer Quarter

Hi everyone! First I just want to say what an awesome resource this is! :)

My name is Jessica, and I am a first year student doing my pre nursing studies. I am on schedule to get in to the nursing program at my school for Fall 2014 (if everything goes smoothly!) As of right now I pretty much just have Bio, Micro Bio, A&P 1 and 2. At the school I go to getting the CNA license is mandatory, and I plan on going to work after I complete the class and clinical.

Here is my dilemma:

I plan on taking Biology 211, Nurs100, and Stats.

I would have Biology, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nurs100, Wednesdays, and Stats EITHER Online OR In class Monday and Wednesday.

I know this is a really big class load for the summer and I was hoping for some suggestions for people that have also taken big summer course loads. I am going to be living back at my parents house for those 2 months so that I am closer to my school and that I have very little distractions for my studies.

Also, should I take online Stats or in class Stats? In all math classes I have taken this far I haven't dropped below a 93%. My GPA as of right now is a 4.0.

Bravo on your GPA thus far. You sure don't want to take statistics online. With all the reviews I read before making this conclusion, almost everyone suggested taking Stats in class, which is what I am doing right now. My college Algebra Math was 98% and my current GPA is also 4.0. I don't want to mess with it at all. I will suggest you take two classes for summer. Or three if its mandatory, but it should be two in class and one less stressful online class (definitely not stats).

Besides, I learnt that Statistics does not require much algebra since they are two different math, which means one can be extremely good in algebra, but not good in Stats. Also a novice in Algebra might perform much better in Stats than an algebra guru.

I am not strong in math at all, and I took Stats online and earned an A. The on campus class uses the same software for homework and quizzes, so they really aren't much different in my opinion. There are still tons of resources available to you in an online Math class. As long as you are disciplined and do the work required, you will do well. I have found that most people who warn against taking it online saying it'll ruin your GPA simply did not do the work they should have. Don't let online math scare you, it's not any different than taking it in class other than the driving time you will save. As long as you take advantage of your teacher and outside resources when you get stuck, you will do great!

I haven't taken statistics. I wanted to take it online this summer but "most" of the reviews I read were against taking it online so I had to register for the hybrid class, which begins on the 20th.

I mentioned it in my comment that it was based on the reviews I read.

Just giving an input on what I thought was a nice idea, but it appears we most likely would like to hear what we want to hear in a situation like this.

Online Stats is really not that bad. It's a lot of work, yes, but it will be a lot of work on campus too.

I think it really depends on how much you find yourself depending on lectures to absorb material.

I personally could not take stats online. I need the lectures, the example problems worked out in class with in-class discussion in order to absorb the material. I'm not a strong math student so your experience might be different.

Have you taken online courses before? I have done several and actually like the format for some topics. If you've got experience with them, maybe it would be fine.

At my school they do offer an online version of stats and I have not heard of anyone reporting success from it. I know of at least 4 people who started it and had to drop it to take it in class. That's not to discourage you, that's just my local example. There are obviously people who do fine with the online version, like the previous poster.

I also took stats many years ago over the summer and it was brutal. Class every day with lots of homework. I'm taking it again now during the quarter and the pace is perfect. Take into account that a normal summer load is usually about half a normal semester/quarter load as the amount of material is the same, it's just compressed into a shorter time frame. When I took that one stats course, I was in one other easy Geography course and that was plenty. I was working too and I recall the first half of that summer not being all that much fun.

Thank you all for so much help! I think I may just stick to taking it in class since I haven't tried an online class before, and I will already be on campus so I might as well just take it there! :) It's great that you all had experience and were able to give me examples of how it was for you, I greatly appreciate that.
