Suggestions for new RNs in MI

Hello my lovely nurse peers!!!

I will be graduating from a great second degree nursing program in May. My first degree was in psychology and I have 16 months hospital volunteer experience on a post-op surg floor. I have been networking and already looking for jobs. I have had the opportunity to shadow a handful of nurses and it went well and I am still I'm contact with them. My GPA is 3.8 and I have professors willing to write my letter of recommendation. I'm saying all this to say... I'm am trying to plan ahead as much as possible and hopefully have a job in May. I feel like I'm going out of my mind because I know jobs are scarce in MI and I love nursing and just want to work.

Any suggestions as to what more I can do for the time being?

Recommendations of best hospital to work in MI?

Which hospitals tend to hire new grads? Which hospitals tend to hire the most in general?

Any job fairs coming up?

Henry Ford hires new grads even in ICU type units. I am not sure of other facilities. I like working for Henry Ford (I work at Wyandotte). I have worked at HF Main campus in Detroit and liked it there too.

I will say I would not recommend to work for Oakwood based on personal experience. Where in Michigan are you?

I am very interested in Henry Ford Health System. An instructor of mine recommended that I look into working at the DownRiver ICU and put me in contact with one of the mangers there. I'm waiting for a response back, but I'm very enthusiastic about the possibility of working there. I hear that Henry Ford has a nurse preceptorship program for new nurses and take time to train ICU pts.

What do you know about the shadowing process? I have been trying to shadow someone there, but the nurse education department has yet to call me back so I'm kind of just waiting to see what's going to happen...patiently waiting lol

How did you feel working there as a new nurse?

You cant defer anyone from working for a system based on your own personal experience, Oakwood is a wonderful system to work for and they pay good. Im sorry you had a bad experience but every place isn't for everyone. Glad to hear that you like it at Henry Ford.

University of Michigan hires new grads in all areas, I am currently precepting one in peds ER. Just keep watching the careers page as they randomly hire new grads. Good luck!

There were several a few weeks ago, we are interviewing now so I'm not sure what the other units are doing. It takes time any where but the U seems slower.

Is this true for ADNs, or just for BSNs? So far, I've had my license for over a year, and I haven't had any luck in finding a job, even with nursing homes. The only issue I can see is that I don't have a work history. What I mean is that I haven't had a "real" job since I quit being a paperboy at age 13. I'm going to be 28 in June. I do work with my dad in his office--he's a dermatologist--but neither of us consider it a true job; it's just something to do to pass the time, and I barely do anything that actually requires nursing knowledge.

I don't have any illusions that I'm going to get my dream job. I'd actually prefer to work midnights. I just want something that I can do for a few years, get some half-ways decent references, and solidify my nursing skills. Heck, as long as it's within driving distance of my parents' home in Jackson, I'd work for half-pay. I'd work for a dollar. For beans. Compliments, even! I need usable experience and ways to test my skills.

So far, I don't have much hope.

The UofM health system is pretty much only hiring BSNs now I got lucky and landed my job when Mott's opened and they needed a lot of people fast. Just keep trying and apply for every position that comes available.
