Suffolk County Community College (Summer Classes?)

I understand your hesitancy regarding personal info. especially if you have an uncommon name. You said you work 9-5 but I was thinking you were in days.

I was very lucky to land the CNA job in an ICU. This is my first healthcare job. I was previously in construction project management. I too kick myself that I did not pursue this years ago, but as they say "it is what it is". At least I am getting into it now, and I absolutely love what I do, and get exposure to the type of work I want to do. I have already talked to my boss about a job as an RN once I graduate. It may be putting the cart before the horse, but I am the kind of person that likes to have my future in place as much as possible.

Yes I am ready for Monday. I have taken classes every semester since Spring of 2008, so I am used to no break over the summer or the winter. My attitude is "whatever it takes". I just finished Dev. Psych and Chem. I. The Psych. class was easy enough and I got an easy A, but it was close with the Chemistry. I had not taken any Chem. since high school many years ago so I really had to work my butt off for the grade I wanted. I ordered my books on Half.com yesterday so I should get them by Saturday so I will have them for Monday. I have a crappy stethoscope that I got when I took the CNA class at BOCES. I talked to some of the RNs on my unit and the consensus is a Littman Classic II or Cardiology III. The pricing is between $96 and $148. I will start off with the crappy one and buy another if I need it.

I Saw your posts about suffolk and that you are starting in the fall and I think you said you are also on the waiting list for stony brook 2 year program. I just wanted to let you know that i am in the same exact boat as you. I been accepted to ammerman and I was put on the waiting list for stony brook. when I was thinking iit through, I thought being that i have my bachelors it may be a waist of time to get another one being that my goal is to get into a masters program and for that you only need your associate in nursing if you have your bachelors already, I wanted to ask for your opinion if i am making a mistake thinking that way, I mean i call stony brook today and they are not even up to workin off of the 2 year list, b/c they were trying to get the one year ppl going. I have 2 small kids and I been going crazy trying to figure out the best baby sitting situation for them while i go to school and sufflk seemed perfect as it was less credits, which means less hours i have to put my kids in day care and there cheaper in that aspect as well. there is also the other factor that its half the amount of credits at suffolk vs stony brook, which leads me to believe I may do much better at suffolk when it comes to grades. but part of me is thinking to turn down a spot at stony brook if I am offered one, may be really crazy and i am scared I will regret it.

I guess that you gave your deposit to Suffolk already. I did not want to wait for Stony Brook and take a chance of not getting in so I accepted at Suffolk and am already taking Health Assessment over the Summer. In the long run it will work out better for me because I am completely done with all classes except the nursing classes. This will allow me to continue to work while I go to school. I too have a bachelor's but it is in finance and I don't think that will get me very far with trying to get into a master's nursing program. I plan on getting Associates to BSN at Stony Brook as soon as I finish at Suffolk.

The bottom line is that no matter what, you will be done in 2 years and be an RN. After really evaluating, I am glad that I did not get into SB. It will be an easier load for me to do the the AAS RN then the BSN after and I really won't lose any time because the graduate program I am going for requires at least one year of critical care experience which I will get while I am getting my BSN.

my first bachelors is in psychology, and I too want to eventually want to get my masters, do you think I will have to still get the bsn at some point if I want to do that. I went to a lot of info sessions and a lot of them say that you dont need a bsn if you have a bachelors in another area and a associate in nursing.

I think it depends on which type of masters in nursing you want and the school. I guess I would contact the school. I too like to know where I stand, but I figure I have at least my first year of nursing school before I have to worry about any more choices.

Not sure if ppl are still responding, but for the people who got into Sccc, what were ur averages?? mine is 3.2 and i have every class (except the nursing classes) and I'm an LPN .... After hearing theyre highly competitive im doubtful that ill get in

HI LPN1987, I applied at sccc back in january, last week i got the acceptance letter into the lpn-rn program at grant campus, my gpa is 3.6 but my friend got accepted with 3.2 gpa, did you apply ?

I haven't applied yet but once I get my grades for this semester I'm going to apply.. I got a C+ in sociology & human development a B+ in psych and a B in a&p, I'm waiting for my english grade (should be a B or an A not sure yet) and right now my avg for a&p 2 is about a B as well... Do I have a shot?

I was put on the alternate list for Stony Brook's 2 yr program. Does anyone know how the list works?
