In 2003 I wrote 3 checks....one for each school (elem, ms, hs) for the children to have their lunch accounts in the positive. Those checks bounced. Being in the middle of a divorce....5 kids....working mom....I sent the cash in to cover the checks and NSF fee with a note as to what I wanted done with the money (clear the checks) with one child per school. No....I didn't follow up. Thought it was handled and went on with a move to a new job in FL.

Unbeknownst to me, on the very day I started my new job in FL, a warrant was issued for my arrest. Fast forward a few months....I return to SC for my son's juvenile hearing (where they finally dismissed the charges because they had nothing)....and I am arrested on the way out of the court room!

I had to get home and back to work in FL! Also, in SC there is no defense. The judge simply asks, did you write the check? If yes, automatically guilty. :uhoh3: I pay for the checks...pay the court costs and now have a criminal history of 3 misdemeanors! (BTW, the school admitted to getting the $ I sent and the note. They simply put the money in my kids accounts and never said word one to me!)

I finally decided to pursue nursing. Yes, I was nervous, but I honestly felt that this would be fine.....I would graduate 7 years + after the fact. Nursing school and the clinical facilities had no problem with the charges. I graduated, got my ATT and on Feb 7, 2011, I passed the NCLEX! My license was posted 2 days later! I was thrilled!

But, I had even more reason to be thrilled. Unknown to my friends and collegues....Sept 1 2010, I was arrested for Felony Child Abuse and 2 counts of Battery! This from my own 17.5 yo daughter! I smacked her up the back side of the head for being disrespectful! (Thanks all you liberal turds out there!) It was a power play for her. Because of the child abuse charge...she and I could not be in the same house. My husband, her step-dad, told her that she needed to leave. She moved in with her sister. I actually, voluntarily, paid all her expenses until she was 18.

The persecutors (tongue in cheek) kept offering PTI. I refused. As a result, I refused to register for the NCLEX until it was resolved. MANY months later.....they gave up. They said my daughter's story kept changing and there is no way they could get a conviction. DUH! [Yes, my daughter and I have repaired our relationship and she was tops in her Navy basic training graduating class!!!! :yeah: ] So proud!

Because of the SC convictions, FL would not allow me to seal or expunge the arrest. FL never even asked about it. Remember, the app asks you to discuss convictions and that is ALL I disclosed. I was nervous, but I did get my license!

So then I need to relocate back to SC. Same thing....but far more nervous because their statutes are ambiguous. I did get my license by endorsement after a call about the arrest.....

Here is the most important part of the story....

In a down economy, I *did* get my first nursing job in FL at a LTC facility. Hated it. In the meantime, my SC license came through. I quit my job with notice and started applying in SC again (got no takers when I had no SC license to offer). I got 3 interviews and 2 offers!!!! :yeah: :nurse: Monday I will start work on a Meg/Surg ortho floor!!!

When a door closes.....find a window to get in!

The truth.

I have 3 misdemeanor convictions for theft by check. I listed dates, case numbers and dispositions and location of the court. I added a narrative as requested to explain what happened and what I learned from it.

Since the later arrests were not CONVICTIONS, I did NOT disclose this as it was not asked for. Period.

What exactly does convicted of a crime entail...??

yeah seriously? I meant convicted? If its expunged Do u still put yes? I just want to make sure I do the right thing and not make a stupid mistake..I'm pretty sure its ok to ask this is what this site is for!

If it's expunded, I'd put no. You should still disclose it to the BON but I wouldn't put it on applications.

It seems so wishy washy like statements about no and yes on applications for expunged records. I was thinking if its expunged then its sealed somehow but some posts don't concur. What's expunges for then? I think Its a bunch of BS to get more money to the government, seriously government I have my own debt you take care of yours and let me get a job to pay mine off.

I think it just depends on what state you are in. Some don't require you to disclose expungements. But I think if something is expunged, that's what it means. It should be gone. But with all these fancy companies now that do background checks, it seems like the least little thing shows up, even if it's expunged. I really think laws need to be changed. Expunged records should be just that, gone. I also think there needs to be a certain number of years they can go back on a background check. They shouldn't be able to see convictions that are over 7 years old. Unless it's for a violent crime, I could see that being allowed.
