Guys-
I will be finishing my program in mid December 2012 here in California. I want to take the NCLEX as soon as possible, the sooner the better; so my question deals with how soon should I send my application to the BRN?
At school they told us to send it 4-6 weeks before the date we are intending to take the NCLEX, which would be around mid-November. Do you guys think this would be sufficient time to take the exam at the beginning of January?
How soon do you think would be best to send it, just in case there is a delay or something takes time at the BRN while going over my app?
Thanks

I'd say at least 6 weeks to be on the safe side. It's very possible to be able to take it at the beginning of January. Keep in mind that in order for you to receive your Authorization to Test (ATT), the individualized code you use to schedule your NCLEX test date through Pearson VUE, your school needs to submit your official transcript to the BRN. This may take an additional week or so depending on how quick your school and the BRN does the paperwork. This is all from my personal experience so your school might do it a little different. I'd ask someone working in your Department of Nursing about how early students were able to take the NCLEX in the past.

I don't know how the CA BON works about ATTs as I'm a transplant. But as far as my last BON worked, I had to send a transcript showing that I have completed my degree requirements before I could get an ATT. What we did when we registered for the test (we registered together as part of one of our classes) is that we requested that our school send a transcript immediately when our last grades were logged.
I got lucky and got my ATT in 1 week. Some others got theirs early but my classmates generally averaged 4 weeks; the longest took 9 weeks...and we all did this at the same time. So there's also a degree of luck in there.
So my suggestion is to register now, have the transcript sent once you meet requirements for your degree (you can request that now too from most schools)...then all you can do is wait and hope CA moves fast (I know, I know).
Good luck.

You won't get an ATT until your school sends the transcripts to the BRN. It doesn't take as long as you think though. I sent my app to the BRN 3 weeks before my degree conferred and my school had a date that we had to submit our transcript forms to them 1 month before our degrees conferred. I got my ATT 1 day after my degree conferred. Some of my classmates sent in their requests 2 months ahead of time and they got their ATT's on the same day I did.
