Students with Psych Issues

Just wondering how deeply do you get involved with students with Psych issues ?

Even though I have been in school nursing a long time, I still feel deeply inadequate (sp?) when dealing with these children.

I most often default to the Guidance Counselors. This is really not my forte, but was wondering what you all do with these cases.

Thanks Group !!

If you ask me School nursing is pretty much 90% Psych Nursing with some acute care tossed in.

Specializes in Pediatrics/Developmental Pediatrics/Research/psych.

My school nursing experience is part of what helped me get my child psych job.

I had 2 anxiety ridden girls to the point of vomit, diarrhea and tremors today, 1 tweaking kid jonesing for a fix, 1 cutter and 1 kid that refuses to eat.

Yea, psych is alive and well.

Sounds about right. I had one kid return 4+ times with very sharp stomach pain likely due to fact that student had a huge test (and two more today) yesterday. Could not get that student to take that test.

My school counselor, school psychologist, and I work very closely and share info. It is awesome to know we have each other's back.

After working as a school nurse, I definitely feel like I could handle working pedi psych!
