Student Loan Repayments

Published

A lot of hospitals say on their website that they have tuition reimbursement but what I want to know is if there are any hospitals in NYC that will pay back student loans instead?

Most hospitals have tuition reimbursement and that is for taking more classes, not towards getting your RN. Such as if you wanted to go back for a BSN or MSN. If the hospital is really desperate they may consider an offer from you, but if they were that short of nurses to even think about it, I don't think I would consider a position with them. Your working conditions would probably be far from acceptable. Or if you do find some place that will pay off your loans, you are probably going to have to give them two years of work for every one year of schooling. Do you really want to do that?

I know many hospitals outside of NYC that do pay back loans. But Im not sure if its common in NYC. Do you live in NYC?

Student loan repayment programs are run by the government - not usually by the individual hospitals. Current RNs can apply for loan repayment under the Nurse Reinvestment Act. Nursing students can apply through the Nurse Education Loan Repayment Program. Do a search for them here. The links were posted a few times.

Another thing to consider if youre not an RN yet: If you take a job in a hospital or nursing home, whether it be ward clerk, nurses aide, transporter, housekeeper, etc, in NYC your union (SEIU/local 1199) will usually pay for you to go to nursing school.

I am very familiar with the reinvestment act. I am also very familiar with many hospitals that offer repayment programs but they are not in NYC. Does anyone know if any NYC hospitals offer such programs?

Try calling recruitment at some of the hospitals and ask! It would be the easiest way to find out and know that you had accurate information.

Kings County Hospital located in Brooklyn, NY will reimburse you 60%

I called Kings hospital to check on this however they have tuition reimbursement not loan reimbursement. Most hospitals do have tuition reimbursement. Thanks anyways.

I think that a lot of VA hospitals offer some sort of loan repayment, as to the amount I am not sure. Also I do not know if there is a VA in NYC, but if there is try giving them a call.
