Idont live in NC but am looking to relocate also. I can only answer one of your questions. Staff nurses make the same amount reqardless of specialty. IN other words ICU nurses make the same as med-surg. Experience is the only thing that pays more for staff nurses within a facility. Also, reading another thread I saw that in w-s new grads were making 19.25 and hour plus shift dif after 3pm. I dont know about getting a job in your current field but never worry about getting a nursing job anywhere unless you really want a specific job. Jobs are everywhere. I live in upstate NY and got 3 offers out of school and declined many more interviews.

I believe you can be a great nurse at any level and most nurses with the many years of experience, as you mentioned, will always be better than a new nurse no matter the difference in education. However, I do think the profession of nursing will advance as the educational requirements do. Look at other professions, very few with our level if responsiblity allow such minimal education. In fact most require a masters degree (social work, physical therapy, etc.) This may or may not actually make nurses better. Most people who argue this topic mean no disrespect to differently educated nurses, they only want to see the profession advance. The reason I started this thread is because I was working on a thesis about the topic and after much research and even more writing it is clearly apparent the advance is long awaited.

I heard that North Dakota once required a BSN to practice. Can anyone tell me if this is true and why it didnt work out?

I am working in a PICU. Does anyone know if CRNA schools accept this as ICU experience? Or do they only look at adult ICU? FYI- we do not use swans. Thanks

Can anyone give any info on the NICU at St. Joes? I know there is a childrens hospital in Phoenix where there are many NICU beds...is St. Joes NICU for less serious neonates? Working conditions? Anything will help. Also, can anyone recommend any books for a nurse new to the NICU? Thanks

I have never traveled before. I am interested in traveling to Hawaii but have two dogs that I will not leave behind. Do the travel agencies find you housing and if so would they be likely to accomadate two pups? Also, those of you who travel, do you keep a home base with all your stuff, do you store, or sell everything? FYI...nurses are the least educated health care professionals...they are also the most abundant... to be a hospital social worker one needs a masters degree, a physical therapist also needs a masters degree as does a speech therapist, etc. Something to think about...the nursing shortage comes from the lack of interest in nursing as a profession. Students look for a career with prestige and that often comes with the amount of education needed. How will nursing gain the prestige it needs to attract students if it is the least educated profession? By furthering the educational requirements the profession will progress (hopefully then we will all make more money). I certainly promote a required BSN though I believe those already practicing should be grandfathered.

Keep in mind that just because there is a posting for a job doesnt mean there is an actual job open. A company I worked for kept postings open in case they recieved funds and could afford a new position. So we had resumes coming in everyday for positions that did not exist. Other places keep staple jobs (CNAs, RNs) posted in case they have people leave.

Im about to finish the first year of my BSN program and I am able to sit for the LPN exam. Where do I get info on where/ when/ etc. to take the test? Thanks!
