Hi
Can anybody help? :) Trying to fill in my Application for Licensure with the NY BON and am stuck on a question.
What should I fill in for no. 20 Citizenship/Immigration Status, I don't fit into any of the boxes provided. I am not a citizen and have only just applied for my Visa Screen Certificate and I'm not temporarily in the US. :uhoh21: I guess its not OK to leave it blank!!
Thanks
Kay the 2nd :)
I know you are right when do you think you be going over? You will have to keep me updated on how it goes and how you feel and what it is like working there.
Kay
Don't know when we are going, just waiting for immigration to get to my file and give approval, We've done everything else required. But CGFNS held me back which delayed filing 1-140
Just put in the process of applying for green card, and include a copy of your passport and that should take care of it for you. It has for all of my students.
Hi
Hope u guys don't mind if I tack on to this thread instead of starting a new topic?
I'm planning to apply for post-grad nursing studies in US - still deciding on which school... and most of them requires licensure upon enrolment.
I plan to get NY licensure 1st and endorse it to whatever state the school that will accept me, is in.
I, too, am also stuck on the "Citizenship/Immigration Status" thingie
*scratch head*
So is it right or "legal" for me to also put down "in the process of applying for green card" ?
I don't want to get into any trouble at a later stage, as I have no plans to work in the US.
For my case, can I put it as "in the process of applying for F1 visa" ?
University of Rochester is on my shortlist
And does it matter if I've never been in the US before?
Another query -
from the NY BON's form-1, I notice that it requires notarization.
Any idea if that must be done in US by a US notary?
or I can just approach a notary here in Singapore?
One last one:
How long does it usually take for one to get NY licensure?
Transcripts from my nursing school will take less than 2 weeks to reach CGFNS.
thanks :)

Lets start at the beginning for you..............do you have funding to pay for your full graduate school without you working one bit? I definitely suggest that you go for the green card, with the F1 you will not be permitted to work, and most programs require that you are also able to work. That way you can get more experience.
For NY application, just put that you are applying for a green card and enclose a copy of your passport. Simple as that. That is all that they require.
For NY, you need to go thru CGFNS for the Special Credentials Verification, as well as the Visa Screen program. You can get both if those applications from CGFNS website. You only need Form 1 from the NY BON application. You can see my sticky on this topic at the top of this page.
AS far as getting the documents notarized, just go to the US Embassy and they can take care of it for you.
Hope that this helps.................. :balloons:
Please let me know if you have any more questions.............

wow.. you r fast :)
Thanks for your reply.
I'm getting full sponsorship for my studies. And on completion, will be bonded to continue work here in singapore.

seeing that i'll definitely be applying for a F-1 visa, is Visa Screen still applicable to me?
I'm just wondering;
While waiting for NY BON to process my RN licensure application - am I allowed to apply for licensure in other states at the same time?
cos, i'm too planning to apply to UCSF soon
thanks

You cannot apply for licensure in other states until after you take the NCLEX exam and get a license. Then you only have to endorse to the other state.
With an F-1, you do not need the Visa Screen but you will not be able to work with it, and you will get most of your experience by working. It would be the most beneficial to you, not just for the money but the learning that you wil get that you do not get in school.
Are you going for a MSN or PhD? You wil be spending at least two years here, if not longer, I would definitely suggest being able to work while you are here, and the only way is with a green card. That is how you will ge the best learning experience, and that is the type of info that you want to take back with you. What is going to be your area of specialty for your degree? And especially if you are going the nurse practitioner route......big problem for nurses that came here to study and weren't able to work for more experience, it severly limited them.

hmm.. that is worth considering.. i might just try that...
I'm going for a MSN, either ACNP or CNS (critical care)
i'm also browsing around other parts of this forum to find out more
Thanks again suzanne :)
If you are going for either of those, then by all means make sure that you can work while you are doing your training. It will give you extra experience, to say the least.
Our system of medicine is quite different from where you are. Nurses over here are responsible for doing a complete assessment on their patients at least every eight hours, and that is a head to toe assessment with heart tones and breath sounds included. Nurses over here are also given much more autonomy so I definitely suggest being able to work.
After living in Thailand, I have notced the problems that were caused when the nurse was unable to work while attending grad school in the US. They were unable to really get everything out of their program.
Just a suggestion..............so I would definitely go for getting the Visa Screen while you are doing everything else. It will save you much grief later, and especially when you can use the same documents that are submitted for the NY license.
