I've always wondered, especially after hearing about this guy who brought a snake into the ER----what is the strangest thing you've ever found on (or in) a patient?
What?
again what?!!!
I'm afraid I don't even see how there is a question. We are caregivers, not thieves.
Now, if the police have an issue with the patient's possessions, then it is THEIR responsibility to deal with confiscating whatever is part of their case. We never have a role in that.
If security has to confiscate a weapon or somesuch, that is their role.
On a similar note, when a psych patient is held in the ED, we take and bag possessions. But when they are moved or released, all their property goes with them.
Again, I don't get your drift...
And just in case you didn't understand the answer to your question, yes we of course return cash and other belongings to the patient.
I wasn't implying that you steal from patients. Sorry you misunderstood my question.Medic, thanks for the answer.
Okay, well as long as you're here, what did you mean? As I say, I don't even see how could we NOT give a patient or family their belongings, including cash?
Besides, I wouldn't even have looked at this thread were it not for the name Nefertari. Are you an aficionada of Egyptian archeology?
I wheeled a mid-30 yr old female to CT scan for abdominal pain. While sitting in the control room, the CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis revealed a eye liner or lip liner, stuck up her. It was probably a newer one because it sure was long! I wondered how long she spent trying to get it out before coming to the ED.

Not to be totally vile, but a 5yo shouldn't be able to get anything IN there. Hymen, and all that. Playing doctor is one thing, but something else was going on there.
