Straight to MSN

Hi Guys,

Just finished my ADN and take NCLEX soon.

I also have a BS in Management.

There is a private, NLNAC/CCNE accredited school in my area that has a very good reputation. They say I can apply directly to their MSN program and just have to take 4 additional courses because I dont hav a BSN. So once done I will have an MSN and qualify to sit for the FNP boards....

However, they do not award a BSN along the way.....

Any draw back to having an MSN without a BSN?

As far as I know, there's no drawback to skipping the BSN and going straight for the MSN.

The NP experience issue is a separate topic, and there is evidence on both sides of the equation.

As far as drawbacks for ADN to MSN bridge without a BSN, I can think of only two (from my experience in a program that bridges BA to MSN without BSN):

1.) If you want to work as an RN in a major academic center where a BSN is required to apply prior to receiving your MSN.

2.) If you get part way through your MSN program and for some reason want to stop, you won't have earned a BSN for your troubles.

Came across your post.. I too just graduated from SPC and have a BS in another field and looking at the UT program.

Personally, I don't think anyone will care that your BS isn't in nursing.... My wife is a FNP who has a Master's Degree in community health. She went back and did a post master's certificate program to be eligible to sit for the state exam... The fact that her Master's Degree is in community health and not "nursing" has only been an asset.
