Straight BSN at West Coast University

U.S.A. California

Just wanted to find out if anyone out there has applied to the new program at WC. I called them and their November, 2008 session is already booked. Next term starts in February, 2009.....so i'm curious to find out how the $$$ is going to affect them if at all. Was it easy to get financial aid and loans, especially how the economy is?? :typing

I was almost gonna go to west coast uni. in ontario. I took the hesi..passed and my student loans were approved. However, when i got the terms to the loan it freaked me out! YOu have to get 2 loans. One loan for 1.5 yrs and the other for the other 1.5 yrs. they tell you its gonna cost 120K to get your bsn. But, thats the pice if you pay in cash!!!! After all is said and done.....I would have to pay back about 250k on one loan alone. the price keeps going up. And who knows if you're able to qualify for the second loan. It seemed like a really high risk and i didn't want to get into that much debt. You will be paying off this loan for at least 15 years. If you go this route, you're looking at paying around 500k for your BSN. I didn't want to go to a CC since i'm 33 now. But i dont see another way. patience is a virtue!!!

I read all the comments others put on here that is was going to be a rediculous amount and i didnt' believe them. I'm telling you.....you will be shocked!!! I feel like i wasted my time doing all this and preparing for the hesi. It was an emotional roller coaster, thinking i was gonna be able to finish my BSN in 3 years then that idea is gone in like a second. sigh. CC here I come~!!

hi turbo-lin...thank you for the info...ok let me get this straight...did the financial aid say you'll be paying back around 500k on your loans???...just that one loan that you were approved for 250k would cover for the whole program...i'm 35 and i'm done with most of my pre-req's...i'm still debating if i should go thru community or west coast....right now, i'm studying for the HESI..i'll be taking it in August...i probably won't be able to see the financial aid till November or December cause it's too early for the January enrollment....now that you informed me about the price, i'm curious to see what they'll tell me...cause if they're going to tell me that i'll be paying over 250k for this bsn program, then forget it...not worth it...by the way, which community college are you going to?...i'm attending San Bernardino Valley right now...

Hi Savedo,

Financial aid didn't tell me anything other than we had to apply for the 1st loan now and then the 2nd loan half way through the first half of the program. They also only told me the amount of hm I would need to get financed for which was 46k for first and 43k for second. There are no gaurantees you will get approved for 2nd loan. If you dont get approved for 2nd loan, then you are stuck with the debt of the first loan. And you are screwed because you cant transfer your pre reqs to another school. I mean the amount I would be paying back in the end was outrageous. I can buy a really nice house for the amount you will be paying once you complete the program. I just couldn't justify it.

I decided to enroll at Citrus CC. I just enrolled this week and now its going to be a battle to get classes but I won't have a HUGE DEBT at the end.

Good luck!

thanks turbo-lin...i understand what you're saying...well, i hope you get those classes cause i know how difficult it may be......i'll be done with all my pre-req's by end of this year...and your right, it is an emotional ride, especially when you're around my age....i just want to be a nurse before i turn 40......thank you for the info and good luck to you too...

Im going to take the TEAS now and see what schools I can get into. Im leaving West Coast Univ As a back burners option. I dont know if I want to be in debt right away. The money is what is really scarying me

I went to the Anaheim location 2 weeks ago to find out more about this program. Basically for the 3 years straight BSN it's about $130K, which includes books, tuition, and uniform. I already have a BA from a 4 year institution and completed most of my pre-reqs except of Biochemistry, college English, college Math, and Lower Division writing. My English and Math courses were not the same courses WCU wanted because they were "too advanced." If I wanted to challenge the course it would be a $100 non refundable fee per subject to take the exam whether I passed or not.

With most of my pre-reqs done, my tuition was still $111K. And in addition the estimated time frame for me to complete the BSN program would be 35 months. Considering I have most of my pre-reqs done, I do not understand why I would be forced to stay almost 3 years!!! Keep in mind this program is $15K per semester.

I was only approved for loans because I already have a Bachelor's degree and would not be eligible for any grants. Government loans would be about $30K and I would have to get the rest from private loans. With both government & private loans you are required to start paying 6 months after you graduate.

I told the Nursing representative I wanted to cancel my application after reviewing with the Financial Aid Rep. She was basically trying to sell the program but I told her I would rather be suited somewhere else, such as National University. The cost of that school is $48K for 2 year accelerated BSN and in addition it is WASC accredited, unlike WCU.

Before you consider the straight BSN program I hope you take this into consideration. Having a heavy debt after graduation is not a good thing, especially in this market when nursing jobs aren't easy to find as well.

If you already have a bachelor's degree you should check out Western University of Health Science's nursing program. It's much cheaper and has a great reputation. The tuition at West Coast University is ridiculous especially with the job market not so good for new grad RNs.

Yeah West Coast is expensive. What also TICKED me off was that they wanted me to RETAKE my chemistry! I basically laughed at that and decided it wasnt for me. I think that having to re take a class that I already got in an A in is stupid.

Espcically since the classes that transfered in BARELY lowered my tutition.

If you HAVE ALL THE MONEY from either parents or grandparents to help pay for this education then do it.

Otherwise, taking out a loan is quite stupid. Your better off going to RCC or some community college in another state then getting your BSN else where.

Im currently waiting to take the TEAS test, which I am a little nervous about, and Im waiting to hear about what I should expect from that test. I got an 83 on my hesi, and that only had reading grammer math and comprehension....and the TEAS adds science. So...I hope I pass with at least an 80 percent.

Where is Western University? and how much is thier program. All my pre reqs are done, so I need to get into a school this coming spring.

Hi Newbetonursing - the classes that WCU wanted you to retake, were they more than 5 years old?...that's the only reason i can think of.....the pre-req's have to be within 5 years and at least a C grade.....

Western University of Health Science is in Pomona...i did hear they do have a good reputation...if you already have a bachelors degree, you can apply for their Masters-Entry Nursing program...i think it's 3 years...you might want to check out their website...i think they only accept nursing students once a year during the fall for their Masters-Entry program, but i could be wrong...their next enrollment is for Fall of 2011...

Western University of Health Sciences is in Pomona. Here's the link http://www.westernu.edu/xp/edu/home/home.xml. If I had my bachelor's degree I would definitely apply to this school but right now just trying to get into an ADN program. It's a private school so tuition is higher than a JC but comparing it to some other programs such as Loma Linda, Cal Baptist and Azuza Pacific I think you'll see it's much cheaper, and is definitely much cheaper than West Coast University. Once I get my ADN I will probably apply to their ADN to MSN program. GOOD LUCK!!:yeah:

AROD44....

Can I apply for the nursing program over there? I will definately consider it. Again I need to take my TEAS, because I plan to apply to CBU and to Loma Linda.

Is western nice? Are the staff there knowledgeable and trustworthy? You seem to be pretty gun-ho about it.

Give me your thoughts on your experience so far? It doesnt have to be long, just brief.

Thanks so much!

ohh and I also do not have my bach. yet. So I need a program that will allow me to do so.
