Stony Brook University-Recommendations??

Hey guys! So this is like the second time that I am posting on this website. But I have read through other people's post and found it really helpful. I am applying to the school of nursing at Stony Brook University next fall. I currently have a 3.38 GPA (yea, I know its a little low) and I have a good amount of extracurricular activities. I also volunteer at the Stony Brook Hospital and the long Island Veterans Home as much as I can. I have about 150 hours in and I plan on volunteering at a local hospital near my home throughout the summer. I also work on campus throughout the semesters. Do you think this is good enough that maybe I can get in the first around? If not, what do you suggest that I improve (besides the GPA, I'm working on that)? Also, any other information will be helpful!!! I really want to get into SBU!!!!

P.S. can you also suggest other schools that I should apply to in NY? I have looked at Adelphi and Hunter. Actually, I am an out-of-state student. I do plan on applying in my state but I would really love to stay in New York and mostly at SBU!! But you know, I should have backups too.

I just graduated with my BSN from Stony Brook, so I can understand why you really want to come here, because not only is it a great nursing program but I have personally heard how highly our alumni are regarded in hospitals around Long Island and NYC. Plainly stated, your personal statement and your recommendations are your key documents to getting noticed. Make sure you let the committee know how you will succeed in their program and what makes you the kind of nurse Stony Brook strives to have represent them in the profession. That's it. Don't bother trying to be an overachiever and puff up your profile with 85,000 volunteer positions and anything else you can think of. You're already @ SBUH and the LIVH, that's enough! Keep volunteering there and make sure your experiences there are reflected in your personal statement. Show how this is making you the nurse you aspire to be. Not everyone who gets into the nursing program is a straight A student and neither do they likely have hours of volunteering. Everyone is different. Keep doing what you're doing now and you will be OK.

I am going to start writing my personal statement this summer and get it read and proofed by some people. Is it the same topic each year? I looked up the question on this year's application and it asked about why do you want to be a nurse and something else. Once again, thanks for responding back!

Personal statement questions have been the exact same ones for the past 3 years at least, so I doubt they will be different for next year ... good luck!
