Stony Brook 2013

Hello everyone! I am in need of serious help/advice. I've had my heart set on Stony Brook's nursing program for about a year now, and am currently at a community college working on prereqs and gen eds. I've been accepted to the college for Fall 2013 and planned on finishing prereqs next year. My current GPA is a 3.9 and I have loads of volunteer experience at a local hospital. As far as prereqs go I've taken: Stats, Gen Bio I, Sociology, and Psych and got a 4.0 in all of them..but I've just discovered that Calc is a corequisite to Chemistry? I've only taken Stats, thinking that was the only math requirement, well I was wrong. I'm not even eligable to take Pre Calc at my CC because I don't have the prereq..how in the world do I get to Calc and can I in a decent amount of time? I understand there is a placement test at SB but I honestly don't think I'd place in Pre Calc. Should I go to another school that doesn't require Calc? (i've also been accepted to Brockport and Buffalo). HELP! :(

    If you don't have to take chem at SB I would recommend enrolling non-matric at a community college. If you are non-matric you can enroll in any class regrardless of the pre or co reqs. At least that's the case where I go, BMCC.

    I would look into Suffolk CC and see if that's an option. If you're lucky and class schedules work out you could take your other classes at SB and Chem at Suffolk. Good luck!

    Definitely recommend what the previous poster said. You can take CHE 100 or CHE 101 at Suffolk Community College which is 8 minutes down the road from Stony Brook, no need for calc as a pre-req and they transfer over to Stony Brook just fine. I knew a bunch of Stony Brook students that would non-matriculate at Suffolk to take a few random classes.

    Good Luck getting into Stony Brook's nursing program, if the basic BSN is what you're after, it is beyond super competitive to get in. I applied with a 4.0 and over a year's experience volunteering at the hospital every week and was denied. Definitely think it's part being a good applicant and part luck.

    Thank you for your feedback! I think I'm going to take Chem over the summer. And I know how competitive it is, and that scares the hell out of me! haha. I guess all I can do is work hard and get as much experience as I possibly can.
