Hey guys! So I just applied to the SBU Basic (2 year) program a couple of days ago. I thought it would be nice to start a forum. Feel free to ask any questions! And good luck to all who are applying!!!
Unbelievably excited that I got accepted!! I'm just freaking out a little not knowing what my schedule will be like in sept. I have a 3 1/2 year old and I need to work around his schedule. Anyone have any idea what the first semester is like? I researched what classes we will be taking, but no clue what times they are available.
How they pick people, or why I was picked is still a mystery!! I knew I had a chance, but didn't think I had a good chance. But .... I got in! Here's my stats: I hold an associates from Suffolk, with a cum 3.6 GPA. I hold a bachelors in biology from stony brook, with only a cum of 2.46. So overall my undergrad with those two combined equates to about a 2.9 or 3.0. In the 57 credits from the pre-req courses that are required as stated in the application I have a 3.567. I got my CNA in November, and started working at stony brook hospital as a CA about 4 days before the application was due, so I put that as my work experience and my CNA under my verification along with my BLS cert. I got a recommendation from my manager at Marshall's, where I worked for 5 years. I got another from the clinical instructor of my CNA course and the third was from my A&PII professor, which I didn't know all so personally, but I got an A in the class and scored a 100% on every exam and lab practical. Lastly, i put a lot of time and effort into my personal statement. A lot! I worked on it for a few months. I also added an additional comments statement which described why my undergrad GPA at stony brook was so low and how things have changed in my life. ( ....during my undergrad at SBU i was involved in a very unhealthy abusive relationship and when i tried to leave him ultimately, things got worse and really scary. Police and such were involved, restraining orders, stalking .... Fun stuff. I began to suffer from depression and PTSD and had to enter therapy) it was a very personal situation to explain, but i was open and honest. Im not sure if my explanation of that situation helped me at all or not, but it seems that my grades are not quite as competitive as some of those who have replied to you question, so who knows? I did something right amongst all that, and they chose me!! I couldn't be more excited. Good luck to you on your application for next year!!
If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your CNA from??
I am not sure if you guys will have the same schedule as we had but this was my fall schedule:
Mon: fundamentals of nursing 2-12...health assement 1-4...bio math 4-6 ( this class only meets a couple of times)
Tues: fundamentals/health assessment lab 9-4
Weds: fundamentals 9-12..perspectives in nursing 1-4 (this class ended in early November)
Thurs, sat or sun: clinicals (depending on what you get and you will either get 8 hr or 12 he clinicals)
Health care policy meets 3 times one specifics dates and the time was 4-6...
The first week in November we also started pathology 10-12 and then pharmacology from 1-3
Parmacology was 2 days a week and switched off with perspectives once it ended.
You guys may have a different schedule tho so don't go by what mine was...just giving you a ballpark of my semester last fall..congrats to everyone accepted!! It's an amazing program!
I wanted to get certified but have no idea what places offer the certification. Do they still offer it?
They may? Give them a call and find out! I know SBU hospital has a class, so does Brookhaven hospital. Boces does as well. And I would check other nursing homes local to you to see if they do too. Good luck!
Oh and pathology is on Fridays! So Friday was patho 10-12 then pharm 1-3 (pharm was weds 1-3 also)..any questions feel free to ask!!
So, you are saying that the schedule is 5 days classes and one day clinicals on the weekend? Did I get it right! Do you think it is possible to work even part time while on this schedule? Did you work?
4 days classes, one day of clinicals depending if you get a Thursday clinical or a weekend. Friday classes don't start until November. Some ppl in my class work and are okay. I, on the other hand couldn't do it. I couldn't juggle all of the work and be at my job on my game without thinking about how much studying I had to get done.. It really depends on the person.

I don't know how many spots usually open for the wait listed. I am most likely not taking a spot if it's offered to me. I have heard in past years that quite a few people got called from the wait list, so don't give up hope. :)
