Stony Brook Nursing Basic BSN Fall 2013 applicants

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hey guys! So I just applied to the SBU Basic (2 year) program a couple of days ago. I thought it would be nice to start a forum. Feel free to ask any questions! And good luck to all who are applying!!!

Or maybe they threw my app in the trash and laughed. Jk, my science gpa is good, but my cum is not competitive.

Anyone know if SB offers the HBM micro lab over summer and does anyone know anywhere else if they don't?

Chele, what was your cumulative gpa and your pre-req gpa? This is my second yr applying, no waitlist either yr! :( Getting discouraged over here!!

someone else had asked about this a few pages back, too--my gpa for science prereqs was 3.95 but my cumulative for undergrad was not nearly as impressive. i have volunteered both at Massachusetts General Hospital when I was living in Boston and I am very active in my volunteer ambulance company here on LI (I'm also an EMT). i got recommendations from two former employers and a doctor i work for. truthfully, i have no idea how they pick their people--this was my second year trying to get in and something finally paid off :) i definitely think the volunteer experience helps, though.

Hey everyone, congrats to everyone accepted!

I will be applying to stony brook 1 and 2 year programs next year and just have 2 questions for all you accepted.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA in your science prereqs? And also, do any of you have volunteer experience in a medical setting? I heard that helps alot but since I work full-time its hard to find time to do that. i was wondering if it was considered like a requirement or just a recommendation for acceptance into the program.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

How they pick people, or why I was picked is still a mystery!! I knew I had a chance, but didn't think I had a good chance. But .... I got in! Here's my stats: I hold an associates from Suffolk, with a cum 3.6 GPA. I hold a bachelors in biology from stony brook, with only a cum of 2.46. So overall my undergrad with those two combined equates to about a 2.9 or 3.0. In the 57 credits from the pre-req courses that are required as stated in the application I have a 3.567. I got my CNA in November, and started working at stony brook hospital as a CA about 4 days before the application was due, so I put that as my work experience and my CNA under my verification along with my BLS cert. I got a recommendation from my manager at Marshall's, where I worked for 5 years. I got another from the clinical instructor of my CNA course and the third was from my A&PII professor, which I didn't know all so personally, but I got an A in the class and scored a 100% on every exam and lab practical. Lastly, i put a lot of time and effort into my personal statement. A lot! I worked on it for a few months. I also added an additional comments statement which described why my undergrad GPA at stony brook was so low and how things have changed in my life. ( ....during my undergrad at SBU i was involved in a very unhealthy abusive relationship and when i tried to leave him ultimately, things got worse and really scary. Police and such were involved, restraining orders, stalking .... Fun stuff. I began to suffer from depression and PTSD and had to enter therapy) it was a very personal situation to explain, but i was open and honest. Im not sure if my explanation of that situation helped me at all or not, but it seems that my grades are not quite as competitive as some of those who have replied to you question, so who knows? I did something right amongst all that, and they chose me!! I couldn't be more excited. Good luck to you on your application for next year!!

This is my second yr applying to both programs with denials each of the four times. I have over 1,000 volunteer hours (for many different organizations but I now have A LOT of time in the Stony Brook Children's program), I have a 3.11 gpa in my bachelor's and about a 3.75 in my pre-reqs. I poured my heart into my personal essay and had great letters of recommendation. If Chele doesn't get in on her third try I am going to cry for her!!!!

I got waitlisted so that means I'll be attending Molloy for Nursing in the Fall! :) Let me know if anyone else is going!!!!

I also got waitlisted.

AHHH Chele, I'm upset for you!!! Sending good vibes that you get in. What are your stats?

Got waitlisted too emily and chele.....you know how many people they waitlist and if spots usually open?

AHHH Chele, I'm upset for you!!! Sending good vibes that you get in. What are your stats?

My pre-req's are a 3.8 and my overall gpa is a 3.2. I know what really stands out for them is your personal statement. I did the best I could on everything, so I'm not upset. I've actually been offered a job today that I am accepting. I'm going back into my old career in marketing/design. So, even if I get chosen off of the waitlist, I may not take it. Good luck to everyone else.

I admire your positivity! Some times one thing falls apart so another can come together! Good luck in your new position! We will all be rooting for you!!
