It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)
aquarainxd,
I have been starting to research places where we can get certified as well. The one that we need is the BLS for healthcare providers, and most of them come with the AED training. Basically, all of the websites that I have seen that issue this certification comes from either Red Cross or American Heart Association. The prices that I have seen vary. The cheapest that I found, that I think I am going to sign up for is $70 for a four hour course. It's called Heartstart Training and they offer the program in Huntington, Queens, Manhattan, Valley Stream and the Bronx. I am not sure where you are from but I would just google the program and see what comes up in your area. CPR123 is another website that offers it for $80. There are many different days and times you can sign up for right on the website!
Hope this helps!
Congrats to all who have been accepted. Unfortunately I also received my rejection letter today but I was accepted to Binghamton's accelerated program, so I guess I will be heading upstate! Did anyone else also apply to Binghamton? I'm really bummed about Stony Brook, but I will absolutely make the best of it!
For those that live near Huntington Long Island, NY I received mine at Huntington Volunteer Fire Department. I believe it was $50 and they provide CPR w/ AED training.[/quote']You'll definitely need BLS for healthcare providers which is different than just CPR for the "lay person" as they call it. I don't know which one you have cttruong but thought if mention it just in case. Classes are usually $70 and up. Also, I don't know what Stony requires but almost every hospital I've worked at requires AHA and doesn't accept Red Cross (this was on the west coast, standards could be different here). AHA is always the safer bet though, I think. Hope that helps!!

Yes! Let me clarify. The certification I got is under AHA BLS for healthcare providers. Here is their website: http://www.huntingtoncpr.com/
Congrats to all who were accepted!
JL76, don't worry about it. I am a black male, from an inner-city. I have a Bachelor's, Master's, and Advanced Diploma, 3.5 overall GPA, lived abroad in both Italy and Germany,(I'm NOT in the military.) speak both italian and german, won prizes, volunteer in a hospital and for a hospice care facility. I've been working steadily, including in both Italy and Germany, since I finished my studies... I can say with confidence that it is their loss. I did most of my pre-reqs online... that is apparently frowned upon. For the record, transcripts don't show whether courses were done online or not, so that means that they would have to assume that, except that they were in California, Kansas, and Iowa. At the risk of sounding bitter, SB wasn't my first pick. In fact I was actually turned off by the info session. I felt that they were a bit cocky and knew that they had the upper hand.(because it's the only program in the area and it's cheap.) A few weeks later, I went to another school's info session and they sold me on the program. I applied and am awaiting a response.
Good luck to you, my fellow future Murse! We will certainly be where we are intended to be, bringing much needed value to the field of nursing!

Hi,
I want to ask how are those who got accepted will get the certification for basic life support for health care providers w/AED? I am trying to find it under american heart association and american red cross but the naming are quite confusing.
I went through the american heart association to know more about signing up and reading the FAQ but it doesn't say how much it will cost for the course. Has anyone done it before and can show me? I rather not sign up yet. And do I just call the location that has the classroom and skill course available and make a date?
Hope this is not a bothersome question and thank you!
