It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)
Quite an early start! If I were you I'd wait because they might change the books, but up to you. Just an FYI, you can buy all of the books used and buy all the old editions. They cost like a couple dollars each. Professor Voelpel is going to tell you that you need to buy books at the bookstore. Don't do it! She tells you this because the school has contracts with the book companies and the bookstore rips of students. You won't really read any of the books and will only use them as a reference. I would recommend having a hard copy of all them because they are super helpful as a reference, but it is such a waste of money to by new editions or even used ones from the bookstore.
Also, I have digital copies of all the books. I'd be happy to give them to the new class. Do you guys have an FB page? I can post them there. Anyways...here is our booklist thus far:
Pharm: Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 7th Edition
OB: Fundamentals of Maternal-Newborn Nursing by Murray and McKinney
Peds: Child Health Nursing Partnering with Children and Families, Ball Bindler and Cowen
Research: Essentials of Nursing Research by Polit and Beck
Med Math: Henke's Med Math by Susan Buchholz
Fundamentals: Fundamentals of Nursing by potter and perry
Pathology: Pathology for Health Profressionals by Damnjanov
Nutrition: Nutrition Essentials for Nursing Practice by Dudek
Psychiatry: Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by Townsend
Perspectives: I think I sold it so I'm not really sure
Policy: Never used it and I seem to have sold it
Additional Books: Saunders Comprensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination
That's just summer and fall. We haven't received our booklist for spring yet.
Good Lucke!
I have a question about clinical for those of you currently in the program or have graduated.
I know a few months back some of you were talking about DEU and SB24 and how you can chose where you want to do your clinicals. I was just wondering if most students get to actually choose what rotation they would rather do or is one more competitive then the other? I would love to chose SB24 because ultimately my goal would be to work at Stony Brook upon graduation, but i am wondering how competitive it is? Like do they try to accommodate everyone or do they just place you in a group and thats your set group for the duration of the program?
I would like to do most of my clinicals at Stony Brook hospital but I am wondering how likely I would be to get that?
This list is amazing. Thanks a bunch. If they only cost a couple of dollars I don't mind shedding it to get ahead. It's going to be a crammed year and I don't want to risk falling behind.[/quote']Getting ahead really isn't necessary but if you'd like to, focus on the nursing based classes. Other classes like research, policy, med math, and the other 1-2 unit classes are just fluff and easy A's. Also, tests are 99.99% from the powerpoints and in class material. The books are just good as a reference to clarify the powerpoints.

Hi everyone, does anyone know if we will get notified regardless? I thought today was the deadline.
