Stony Brook Accelerated BSN class of 2013

Hey all! Just wanted to lend my support to anyone else who is applying to SB next summer! It's a grueling process :-)):yeah:

Having already been halfway through the program, I can definitely say that dev psych and stats would be welcome prereqs. One definitely uses that knowledge, particularly in OB and Peds. Statistics is useful for the Research class, which I suspect will become a more intense class than I had.

Nutrition should be added as a prereq for that matter. We have to take it anyway and other schools require it. I asked to have it waived but they did not allow saying it was not a 300-level equivalent. Seriously, where is it that upper level? So I had to retake it.

As for interviews, I still think they should have them. One school I applied to in Florida has them. About 120 applicants are invited to interview from a pool of ~500 (granted, they rank everyone on GPA and TEAS score and the highest get selected for interview .... but I still think it can be done with SBU having essays and letters). The interviewers are placed in groups of 5 and the group interview together before a faculty member, a dean, and a nurse with ties to the school or an alum. So basically, everyone in your group is part of your interview. Good chance to see how well you will work in teams, which is inevitable in nursing school). 60 admitted applicants and about 10 waitlisted are selected. Simple enough. Would have been interesting to see how different my class would have been with interviews having been done.

Annie, where did you take nutrition? I know that was one of the pre-reqs for their programs and I was unable to find a class comparable anywhere but there. Maybe Ill apply to their two year programs as another backup.

I am actually just finishing up nutrition at suffolk- I couldn't find anything too similar either, but was told this would be accepted. It is called Nutrition- Concepts/Controversies for Health Sciences...it is 3 credits although theirs is listed as 2 credits. I have to take Pathophysiology and Dev. Psych this spring to be done in time before summer. I hope we can find out from SBU in time before the semester so I can drop Patho there if I get in since it is so expensive and SB will not accept any other schools nursing courses...but based on the info here I would still take Dev. psych (taking at Suffolk, so not too expensive) since it sounds like it will be well used.

Isn't the deadline for Adelphi's accelerated program November 15th? I was thinking about applying there as a backup, but didn't get my stuff together in time. It's so expensive, I'm not sure I'd be able to afford it anyways.

Yes, the app deadline was supposed to be 11/15 for the accelerated PATH at Adelphi, but since I had to apply for the 2 year in order to take Pathophysiology, I am considered an internal applicant so I had a little extra time since I was just accepted to the 2 year a couple of weeks ago. I am dreading the tuition also, especially since I will have to take out personal loans to cover it, and the job market for nurses doesn't seem to be going so well based on layoffs, etc. in the NY area, I have read about lately...but will have to take the risk, I can not wait another year. I just hope SBU will work out!!!

How often should I check my solar? or should just wait for the letter?

How often should I check my solar? or should just wait for the letter?

Don't waste your time checking SOLAR anytime before Jan. 15 at the earliest (and I am pretty sure that might even be too early). Chances are someone else will be crazy-checking and will post here when they find out something, which will then cause everyone else to check. There is no prize for checking SOLAR first, LOL :D ... I know the wait is sickening, but it will be here before you know it. You already waited out 2 months from the deadline, what's another month?

Paco our personal information guru :) is right, SBU said mid January...I spoke with admissions today because of one transcript being still unofficial when I requested it twice from the institution and they said my packet was currently being reviewed.(OMG-fingers crossed)

When I asked about how we would be notified, they said this is the first year they are sending out acceptance letters electronically SO not a letter in the mail. The way it was stated it would go to your email and then you would check your SOLAR account.

I am used to the old days of letters but it does seem to make sense this way given the number of people in the applicant pool. The thing I get a little bit irritated being a NYer is that none of the major school (SBU, NYU, Columbia, Cornell, etc.) give priority to their own state residents (no offense to those of you who are not) like other states like North Carolina, Indiana, a very long list. It makes it very difficult at times to apply to certain programs that have a small class size such as this plus the extreme difference in price.

And BTW Paco, I think I speak for all of us by saying thank you so much for all your assistance. I know you are "paying it forward" as it where for the help you received-but you truly do it from the heart and it is apparent on so many levels.

Kimmieminnie, thanks a lot. Means a lot to hear that. Helping out comes natural to me ... I guess I am in the right profession LOL.

Last year, we did get emails letting us know that there was a message waiting for us on SOLAR, but in my case the email arrived AFTER I saw my decision online. Maybe there was a quirk, who knows. I don't know if it will be the same as the last two years, but if you log into SOLAR and see a lot of new tabs (including one that says New Students), chances are you are in. When I was waitlisted my SOLAR did not change at all.

Also, don't be surprised to see an email before then from admissions updating you on the status of decisions. It may come when you least expect it, and you may freak when you see the unopened message, but know it is prob this. It faked us out last year, lol :D

Enough procrastination, got one last final tomorrow ... back to the books! :)
