hello everyone!

i just wanted to vent about the admissions process. a couple of friends and i decided to actively pursue nursing within the last couple of years. i will be submitting an application at the end of the summer for spring. my problem? it seems like the road to making my dream a reality is gonna be a tough one. i have experienced lots of anxiety over the whole thing. i have a friend who applied to a very prestigious bsn program and was accepted. the same friend applied to my number one pick and has gotten the run around since january. she was told that people who had a 3.8 or better were automatically accepted. people who had a 3.0 or lower were eliminated and she is somewhere in between. she has a bachelor's degree (grades average) and a masters (did extremely well)and she is still waiting to get in. another friend was in a program, but unfortunately was dismissed for academic reasons. she wrote a letter requesting to be reinstated for the fall and they said that they were already full. my background is a mess. my gpa has gone up and down. i'm taking my pre-requisites, but i sometimes worry that i'm wasting my time because of my history. it's frustrating. do i meet the requirements? so far, yes. do i really want to be a nurse? yes. however, due to the increase in applications, i am competiting with a bunch of people. many of those seem to have perfect gpa's and academic histories. this will be my first degree. i've always had an interest in nursing, but i had my family and i was not ready to committ until now. if anyone out there wants to posts there frustrations with the process feel free. maybe we can be a support system for each other.

I wish what you describe is the exception to the rule but in fact is pretty normal.

The facts are:

1) Yes, there is a nursing shortage

2) Schools are having a really hard time filling nursing instructor positions because those that have been instructors are being wooed back into practice by extremely nice offers or having their salaries doubled by moving to other nursing schools willing to pay to have the staff.

3) The word is out on the nursing shortage and there has been a mad rush to sign up for nursing school.

Bottom line, expect to wait for a couple years to get in. And for those that are lucky enough to get in, don't take your position for granted and work extra hard because if you fail out, there is a re-entry list a mile long, and you will be waiting years to finish.

you almost described me, i don't know if you're doing this but i'm taking over my a&p 1 & 2 this summer. here in texas "b's" will not get you in to any school!

omg! i'm retaking micro and a&p 2 this summer for the same reason :chuckle . it's so frustrating. there are just too many people applying. good for the field, but bad for me. i can not wait to get started. plus i'm military so my husband asked for stabilization so that i can do this, but i gotta tell ya. things are not looking good. i have a little experience under my belt, so i know what i'm getting into. i hope people are not getting in only to get out in 5 years. i wonder if having some clinical experience should be a requirement. ooops! i hope i haven't opened up a can of worms by making that statement.

I agree with IMustBeCrazy. I was very "lucky" to get into my program for the coming fall. I had done one semester of pre-req's three years ago and then dropped out due to my daughter being born. When I reapplied this year, I didn't even think they would look at my app. Next thing I know, I got an acceptance letter...BUT my GPA was 3.80 and was only 1 point in one stinking class away from a 4.0. In addition, I am told they spoke with my previous prof's about my attitude, etc.

From everything I hear from everyone....it is a long, hard haul. I really think the nursing shortage could be tackled if there were more instructors available for such willing students like you!

Same freaking run around here in Canada! Get us this, get us that, we need this , we need that, do you have a photocopy of your "grandmother's granmother by marriage twice removed cousin's birth certificate from Guam"? just kidding......but really...I was just told after they got my marks that I'll have to submit my finals. I'm doing prereqs. Just reject me now so I don't get my hopes all up! :o

it also greatly depends on the area. here in maryland there are several nursing schools. we only have a couple of adn programs available, so they are a little more competitive. bsn programs are available at just about every major university or private college near the baltimore area.

trust me, you'll find hundreds of those around here. i would guess even more towards fall when all of us newbies are starting the program! welcome to the craziness!

I was very fortunate to get into both of the schools that I applied for, but I want warn you that you really have to say ontop of the admissions proccess. If I had not been super vigilant (sp?) I would not have gotten into either. The first schoool said that I didn't have the biology pre-requisite filled (hello, I have a degree in Biology) so I fixed that. Then the other school said I lacked the English requirement. So, If I had not been ontop of them I wouldn't have even been considered for an interview. It ended well in may case, but let me just say that it was one of the most trying ordeals of my life. I wish that everyone here who is still struggling in their quest to get into nursing school strength, hope and luck. You will prevail!
