Hello! I just received my acceptance package to STCC for the fall of 2009. I am kinda shocked I actually made it in! Just wanted to see if there were anyone else on this forum who got in. :)
Is it true once finished with the first semester, we'll qualify as a CNA. If so wouldn't we still need some type of proof or certification?
I have read/heard the same thing, also and was curious about what it entailed. I was a CNA but I let it lapse. I did look in to renewing it and I would just have to take the test again.

if you work in a hospital, most will hire you as an aid or pct but to work in a nursing home, most require you to get certified...all after completing one year of nursing school.
First Semester is stressful, mainly because you're getting used to everything and the workload can be a lot. I thought first semester was actually worse than the second. Maybe because I had the one day clinical in the first semester. And, I even took an additional class other than Nursing classes in second semester. But it wasn't a lot of work, just 3 hours on Thursdays. No additional work, an easy A to help out my GPA as it was all open book. LoL. That B in Nursing as a 9.0 credit course can hurt.In the beginning, it is basics that you will learn for lab. Taking vitals, a full physical assessment, bed baths, transfers, range of motion, ect. But there is much more you will be doing in clinicals. Right away in the beginning, you will be doing all sorts of paperwork. Should you get a one day clinical, which was only 8 people in our class, you might find yourself scrabbling to get everything done at first. But the up side is you have two days off to get other work done. So there is a trade off.
In my clinical group during the first semester, we worked a flu clinic and administered flu vaccines in October, did blood sugar tests, administered meds (with supervision from our instructor) took vitals, did am care, vitals, physicals, paperwork, gave report to the nurse, etc. This was all in a nursing home.
yes that was what was confusing me! I would find the right book and edition but the years would be off!bananimal~ I was thinking the same about the private student loan as I was thinking of not having to work as much either. I remember reading it on here somewhere too of someone that did it but couldn't remember who. I am glad you asked. I am going to have to research it more too. let me know if you find out anything more too!
Mon and Tue day meeting times end at the end of sept. then it will be the normal schedule. i am so glad I took the first two weeks of work off to get acclamated. I put in for evening clinical too but really want the wed clinical.
I have to get my lab bag soon.
So what is the first semester like? What do you learn? I have been a CNA before so is it kinda like those skills starting out?
we did alot of the duties that CNA's do but we also passed meds, gave injections, and some other things that cna's do not always do.

Keep in mind the Wednesday clinical goes to just 8 people out of the 100 or so that were accepted. It is alot of extra work too, if you are not familiar with the nursing world. Slso, keep in mind that the schedule is not always black and white. There are weeks where you have simulation instead of clinical and may have different hours those weeks, most people get the mon and Tuesday clinicals and I personally had the days but from what I hear, some of the night instructors are adjuncts/part time. I recommend the days if you can.
Here's the site where you can get information on becoming CNA certified. Look under the canidiate guide, you might not have to wait after one year of nursing school if you meet other criteria.

They will tell you all that when you get your semester calendar on the first day of school. Our class...on holiday weeks like columbus day we did an on-campus simulation lab (SIM's) and you do not have clinical. If the college is closed for a holiday, you do not have clinical on the holiday but you will most likely have soemthing to do on the next day.
FYI the friday afternoon lab is a favorable one IMHO, since exams are on Thursdays at 10am, having lab before class on thursday can be tough...it was very laid back and we usually got out early...there is one seat left.
