Staying Up!!

Published

While I see great advice in many of the forums, I have one GOOD question. I will be starting an RN program next month, and I know that I have a LOT of studying ahead of me. Can anyone give tips on what to do to stay awake and focus when it comes time to studying??

I agree, studying for NS should be focused a little more on quality than quantity. I like to switch subjects frequently when I study, which keeps me from getting too far behind on any one, and helps relieve boredom. Don't worry as much about memorizing small details - NCLEX-style questions are all about application of what you've learned, prioritizing, etc. I am and always have been a night owl and insomniac, so I stay up late every night studying. I actually wish I didn't, and never touch caffeine after dinner (or much after lunch), but I get a second wind every single night so I might as well use it to learn. I think I may need to get a scrip for sleeping pills for next semester though, when 0630 clinicals start along with 0800 classes. I'm afraid I'll kill someone if I consistently go in on 2 hours sleep...

just finished my 1st year and found exercise and diet were critical for me and when I ate right and walked the dog I felt better, studied better, and slept better when I slept (which was usually about 6 hr per night). I agree that too much caffeine and cramming doesn't work. Organize so you can study during down time by taking book, notes, or flashcards with you everywhere so if stuck in traffic or waiting for something you can be productive. make time for fun too! Good luck to you!

I did actually lay down in bed to study and had the television on. It is not quite advisable, but somehow, it worked for me. I made sure that my room was clean and well ventilated and would take occasional breaks to see what was happening on TV. I had a pillow that sort of sit up like a chair and was quite comfortable. I was a night studier...the quieter, the better. I also would study between classes. Each person has to find their niche for studying the material. I also used to rewrite my notes with red pen and yellow highlighters. It was something about that which stood out to me. For difficult concepts, I would draw maps which illustrated steps of how what came to what. Good luck in nursing school!

For memorization type-things I made flashcards and brought them with me everywhere...that way I could always pull them out even if I had only a few minutes (grocery line, on the bus etc.)

When studying for hours in a day I always took a break and jogged for a mile or two...felt so much more renewed and could think clearer than if I drank caffine.

You will find what works for you.....Good luck in school
