Staying for Meetings after Your NIGHT SHIFT!

Published

Don't you hate it when your managers or team leaders make a meeting the FIRST thing in the morning? Everybody has to come, even the night shift! AUGH! :angryfire I mean, really, I spend about 12 hours running after doctors, meds, technicians, then now I have to spend a couple more hours listening to inservice that I will forget 5 minutes after the meeting is done? I mean what is the point of the inservice/meeting/whatever if you're not going to retain it afterwards?

And then the safety repercussions! SAFETY! You're tired, sleepy, and you probably have a huge headache. That's after 12 hours. You have to stay for a couple more, then drive home! I do not care how near you live; with those kind of conditions, you are a hazard to yourself and others on the road! Sometimes I even find myself dozing off between lights! And that's without a meeting in the end. I mean CMON! Why do they do this?! ARGH! How do you gus handle it?

my experience has beent that it doesnt matter we schedule meetings at 730 so nights can stay or 10 so nights can come in early and time and time again they dont show. days complains when the meeting is during their shift because they dont want to stay for the on on the pm shift and pms complains because they have to come in early to go to the one before their shift. its not like managers hold meetings every day my don tries very hard to be accomadating to all shifts yet time and again they whine, complain and dont show and then get mad when they get written up for not attending a mandatory meeting. I scheduled 3 different CPR classes for three different weeks at three different times and only had 11 staff show up only 3 of whom were nurses the other 10 who signed up didnt show and now they are whining because their CPR is expired and want me to hold a special class ( i dont get overtime and i dont get paid to teach this class it costs me 4 hours out of my day and being the mds coordinator that is huge. So I think people just need to stop whining and attend their meetings

sorry if i sound like a huge b**** but this whole thing irritates me to no end

I didn't read all the other posts. But I totally feel the OP sometimes. I had to stay for a meeting this morning after a 12hr night shift, despite the fact that my fiancee and I were leaving to pick up friends in Knoxville and then back home to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras weekend. Thank God I don't mid her driving my truck :) Sometimes the meeting times suck but you just have to suck it up and deal.

:) ...In the afternoon is when alot of the night shifters are sleeping... :)

Recently had an afternoon in-service that was mandatory. Since I do home visits noc, that's right in my sleep time. I also, on some nights, log over 100 miles driving, out with the drunks, and being sleepy is downright dangerous.

I slept through part of the in-service, and don't remember a lot about it. If you want me to learn something don't schedule the class during my equivalent of 10pm to 2am.

It has been my experience that most inservices were held at periodic times during the day - like 10:30 am. or 2 p.m. Considering that most night nurses don't get off on time due to short staffing I don't think they should be expected to come in early. Most meetings that were scheduled at 0730- I was still passing 0600 meds!!!

Hospitals should function full steam ahead 24 hours a day (IMO) including meetings, education, inservices etc. Frankly, when you are dealing with sick patients there is no difference just because it is a different time of day. Admissions come, transfers happen, codes, emergencies, wound care ... silly to not have a night shift in every department.

The thing that drives me insane is different staffing grids based on time of day!

But back to the point, best time for night shift meetings is 0400.
