States Accepting Rn By Waiver Veteran

Published

Hi,

I received my RN by waiver in California due to having been an Advanced Hospital Corpsman. I know of only one other state that allows this.

Does anyone know of any others?

Thx!

MN BON has something on their website about military waivers....

Can't you apply for reciprocity with interstate compact states...

west virginia apparently still allows this, as i copied the following from the wv rn board exam application (page 7).

veteran applicants interested in applying for licensure pursuant to wv code 30-24-2: please e-mail the board at [email protected] to obtain information regarding eligibility requirements.

i know that the previous wv rn board applications stated that an rn licensed via this method may not be eligible for licensure in other states.

Normally it is only the PN exam that can be challenged as a corpsman in CA, not the RN exam.

And as mentioned above, you cannot endorse to other states with that license, if you wish to work in another state, the only option is the VA system as it only requires that you hold a license in the US since it is federally mandated, and not be state.

Compact License would not apply to this as the license cannot be endorsed to other states.

Suzanne,

I've already received my RN by this method. I want to know if other states allow this challenge.

When exactly did you receive it? And what type of training did you have? When you look at the website for CA, it only talks about the challenge of the exam for the PN, not the RN. So that is why I am asking you this.

The only states in the past that actually permitted those in the military to challenge were WV and CA. But if willing to work at a VA facility, then you can do that anywhere in the US with your CA license.

I am asking for my own knowlege as this is the first that I am hearing about the RN exam.

When you endorse to other states, you must meet their educational requirements and that is where you will run into trouble. Same way that any that got the RN license in CA thru the 30 option program cannot endorse to any other state without making up the hours to get the ADN first.

i know of one person who obtain his/her RN in that manner, but it was in the 70's (post viet nam)....... the OP did say he was an ADVANCED corpman....

Things have changed considerably in the last ten years or so. Even someone that was trained as physician in another country, must complete a program in an approved school of nursing.

I know of CA permitting corpsmen to challenge the LPN exam, but there is no state that I know of that currently permits one to challenge the RN exam.

The above poster states that he recieved the RN thru a challenge, but how long ago? As I keep stating, things have changed considerably over the past few years and what was done in the past is no longer being done now.

Additionally, WV still accepts Advanced US military medically-trained staff to challenge their exam.
