When I arrived at my LTC last night I was told that the state inspectors made their unannounced visit at 3pm. I heard they were angry when they checked our shower room and found a lot of mold growing on the shower walls. The shower room also have a cabinet which contains hygiene products and is supposed to be locked in the shower room and it was unlocked and wide open when the inspectors arrived. We thought they would visit on night shift but they didn't. I'm sure they will be back today.
Hey there! Hope youdid well with the survey. I hate those times too. I work in LTC and dread the surveyors. It's NOT that we aren't prepared....it's a VERY stressful time when they come. They dissect EVERYTHING you do! I know how to do tx's and med pass. However....I feel like I'm in nsg school all over again with them watching my every move!
Another thing....it's true what you others say ablut staffing. Isn't it funny how many staff members you have when the STATE finally makes their visit?!!! And the mgmt people come out of hiding too. You're right! Once the inspectors leave....so does all of your help.
Our visotors are due soon, too. I hope we do well. New light fixtures, painting, and floors are being waxed. Too bad they can't fix the staffing and call-off problems. THAT"S a whole other story, right?
Have a great week everybody!!!!!:)
Oh my gosh, 11-12 days? The way we always did it was like this. Our CNA's were the ones that did the showers. Our shifts were 6-2, 2-10, 10-6. Our dayshift were the ones that did the showers. We've got 3 hallways, East, South, North. North was showered on Monday, Thursday. East was Tues, Fri. South was Wed, Saturday and then no one got a shower on Sunday unless they requested it or it was necessary. Also we did have a few that were daily showers. Maybe two at a time?!. Our showers were completed usually by lunch time. Our dayshift CNA's were really good and some would even shower the residents on extra days just cause they said they would have wanted someone to shower them daily too. It just depends if you got good CNA's you got it made. Let's all agree that how well you do on the survey relies alot on the CNA's.:) I know the CNA job is a hard one I was one for about 2 1/2 years. If your gonna do a job do it right the first time, you'll save alot of time!:)
Wasn't sure where to put this; been seeing lots on state surveyors. State was in bldg. all last week and I know were in atleast yesterday. One called me at home becasue I allowed a LVN grad, (who is working as a CNA, waiting to retake his boards. He flunked them the first time around. He graduated December 04') to do several chemsticks, 1 in&out cath and several insulins. Another CNA, who is vindictive, turned me into the Texas regualtors, they questioned me, called me unprofessional and said they are turning me into the Texas BNE. I knew the general NPA guildlines, but I truly did not know the specifics that this aide couldn't do these tasks even with supervision if he flunked the boards. Now, I may loose my licence. I was made to feel like a criminal. The lady said, "This is unprofessional." I was appalled and couldn't believe it. Well, now I must wait to here from the BNE. There are many penalities they can give to me. The most severe is taking away my license.
I am not too fond of the surveyors either. If anyone has any idea of what type of penalty the Texas BNE give for this type of occurence, please let me know or email
Don't they know that every single nurse does not know every single regulation? Let us know how this comes out.

I forgot to add on that we got in trouble because our residents were not getting weekly showers. The shower aides here call in sick frequently especially on the week-ends. Management doesn't do anything about it so they continue to do as they damn well please. Some people had not had a shower for over 11-12 days and the state is not happy about it.
