Starting wage for New Grads in the LA area

Published

Hey all,

So I am a current BSN student in Idaho looking at graduating in December. My plan is to move down with family in the LA area and I was wondering what an average starting hourly wage is down there. I'm pretty much just considering hospital settings, so info specific to that would be greatly appreciated. Any hints, tips, and advice is greatly welcomed.

Thanks!

Timm

PS: Opinions on hospitals would also be great, it's always nice to know how people feel about where they work!

well, CHLA emails an "informational packet" once you apply. in the packet it includes a page on wages. the $24 is the base pay.. this doesn't include differentials and overtime. according to CHLA, differentials + overtime = $28/hr .

I can confirm what Starghadeer said. That is the rate for CHLA according to their own documents. And yes it is low for this area. I have heard that people stay there and love it though so maybe they are doing something right...

Hmmkay. I know a friend who went to UCLA (direct entry MSN program) and then got into the Versant residency at Children's so I guess it would kinda have to be awesome to make up for that lack of $$$.

NICU at Harbor - UCLA: $24.41 (will increase with experience)

Wow. The wage quotes so far (with the exception of the one I referenced from the UCLA new grad program - and you know exactly what I'm talking about starghadeer ) seem at least in the realm of $4 p/hr too low relative to even the average in the whole County; let alone the city of LA where new grad pay is higher than many hospitals in smaller suburban areas. I mean like rural Louisiana low. Like you'd make more than that in Needles too low. Like, seriously, the county hosp. here in Vegas pays better than that for NICU new grads.

well, Cedars opened today for like.... 8 seconds. does anyone know what they pay their new grads?

Nope. Hopefully more than CHLA.

I know this topic is for So CAL, but Stanford pay $47 base pay for their new grads. Granted, it cost more to live up there, but you can find some reasonable places outside of Palo Alto.

Here's what I found from past threads on Cedars starting pay:

Base rate $32.50/hr for BSN, night differential $7/hr, night weekend differential $9/hr. MSN will have a 3% higher in base rate

Does anyone know how much USC versant program pays their new grads? I'm really curious to know.

I am curious myself what LA area pays their RNs.... In central valley CA, my base pay is $30 (new rn)... but with nights it's $36, $40 on weekends. I have an interview in LA soon and I hope LA pays more due to the higher cost of living there!!! Just one bedroom rent is $1500+.
