I know I can't be the only one in this boat, but how is everyone dealing with the news that there is no longer a nursing shortage? Here in New England it is almost impossible for new grads to find a decent job right now and that is making me worry. Granted I have 2 years left until I finish, you can only imagine that it won't change too much in that time.
What do you all think about this? What do you think is the best chance a student nurse or new grad has at getting hired at a decent hospital?
Thanks!

I dont understand this. All the girls I've talked to who passed NCLEX this summer already have jobs and didn't have issues. I'm not sure how much of a rumor this is or what. Same with the "hiring from within".

I have not heard this news, at least not here in Texas. Just this weekend I ran into an MSN who I knew while my son was hospitalized and ill...she told me to call her right away when I am getting close to graduation. I am still in my pre-requisites right now!
I think the availability of jobs depends on where you live. You may need to be willing to relocate.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see when my time comes. On the Mass and NH boards here, people are freaking out over employment options. Just scares me.

no longer a nursing shortage? where are you getting your information from b/c its certainly not from reality
In a statement released in March 2008, The Council on Physician and Nurse Supply, an independent group of health care leaders based at the University of Pennsylvania, has determined that 30,000 additional nurses should be graduated annually to meet the nation's healthcare needs, an expansion of 30% over the current number of annual nurse graduates. The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in the U.S. could reach as high as 500,000 by 2025 according to a report released by Dr. Peter Buerhaus and colleagues in March 2008. The report, titled The Future of the Nursing Workforce in the United States: Data, Trends and Implications, found that the demand for RNs is expected to grow by 2% to 3% each year.

Hey again.
I live in NH too so I dont know why you think people cant find jobs. Every new grad I knew got a job pretty fast after graduating.
