Just wondering....have you started out making at least $60,000/year?
I live in Saint Louis and just started as a new grad with 1 year registration, 1 year unit secretary, and 1 year of tech experience at Barnes Jewish Hospital ER. My base hourly rate at a smaller hospital in the area is $21.18. I work days, so without shift differintials I make almost 40K a year. I would have recieved 0.60 more an hour if I had stayed at Barnes because they pay that much extra for a BSN, however the sign on bonus was $2,000 where as the hospital I work for offered $6,000 sign on bouns. They both offer $12,000 loan forgivness for new grads. Plus most of the shifts at Barnes were nights or rotating shifts and the hospital I work for now was offering day shifts for new grads.
I think it is important to consider not only your salary but any bonuses you might recieve and loan forgiveness and for the time required to recieve such bonuses. Plus getting a day shift position was important to me because working nights makes me feel sick.
In MN base pay for new grads seems to be around $25/hr across the board, except in the really dinkly little towns. I've also looked in other states for work, including:
OK: $18-19/hr
NC: $18-19/hr
WA: $25-$27/hr
States like Cali and Florida really seem to vary widely with thier pay rates so it depends on where you go.
"Wow, you guys. I live in Grand Rapids, MI, and we are all starting at $21.62 and hour. That adds up to around 40K before taxes, give or take depending on your vacation allowance. All the hospitals in town are giving or are about to give a $0.60/ hr adjustment based on comparisons with other hospitals in our state, which is about an extra $1,000 per year.
Because I live in a city, the cost of living is higher, but the surrounding hospitals in smaller areas pay less, including those outlying hospitals that are part of a major health care system. You can make $2 and hour less, working in the same position for the same company, just 1/2 an hour away."
I used to live in downtown Grand Rapids for several years and now I live near Flint. I just saw in ad in the Flint Journal for RN positions. With experience, $30/hr., w/o experience, $28/hr. I've also looked on Craigslist several times for jobs in Michigan and the Detroit metro area has starting jobs at about $28-$30/hr.
My husband is in sales and honestly, he made no money in Grand Rapids. Don't get me wrong, I love, love that city. It's waaaaay more beautiful than Flint, but there is not as much money to be made there. Now my husband is making six figures doing the same thing. Just a different area. For some reason, people in GR like to hold on to their money. Over here, we spend it all!
Hey Usf07, I dont know about the entire state of Nevada, but I know BSN new grads are starting out anywhere between $25 and $29/hour in hospitals here in Las Vegas. The $29 was for a new grad in ICU. The state psych hospital here in Vegas is starting BSN new grads out at $28.35. Experienced staff nurses I know are around $35/hr. I know one staff nurse with 25+ years of experience who makes $41/hr
I live in Lancaster ,Pa. I've been scoping out the salary for LPN's here & It seems to be really good. I've met 2 people that when they graduated they got the weekend shift making $25 hourly. I was told that this part is higher paying because of all the older people & nursing homes/ hospitals etc. I am starting school Sept. 2nd. I can't wait!!! Please tell me if the pay is decent w/ pediatrics in any way. I'd rather work w/ children/babies. Help!!!

Depends. Some recruiters give half credit for LPN experience.
