i want to know more about phoenix arizona, its crime rates and standard of living. is transportation easily accessible? i would love to talk to someone who is living in phoenix arizona and is currently working. thanks.. Private Message me, please.

I'd second that...libraries are particularly good because noone reads in this state - you can always find the book you are looking for.

No one reads in this state? I must be in the minority then. I read all the time .... and have ever since I was little.

Why all the generalizations?

Let's not get into a flaming discussion about generalization.

Yet, I think our remarks that the schools in Arizona are "lacking" can be construed as a vast generalization. So you are just as guilty as making a generalization. After all, many schools in Arizona are rated as "exceling" according to federal testing criteria, including my own local schools (Madison District). And using the lame data point that we are "49th out of 50th" in the US hardly justifies a generalization. That statistic actually indicates that we rank 49/50 in terms of per pupil expenditures. Other places such as Washington DC rank in the top but have much worse schools.

Why do I think the schools are crap? Through a vast collection of personal experiences and quantitative data points that another poster here can probably shred to pieces. Why do I think people don't read? Through the same collection of qualitative and quantitative analyses- such as I can almost always get a brand new book from almost any library.

Are there avid readers in AZ? Yes. Are there good schools? Yes. There is an exception to every rule. After all, I'm a guy going into nursing. One can generalize that nurses are mostly women - currently, 95% of all nurses are female.

Madwife - don't take the school thing so seriously. My parents are both retired New York City school teachers and they are constantly trying to get my wife and I to move to Anthem because they think Deer Valley has awesome schools in Anthem...

Though, I would say that you have to be extremely involved as a parent in AZ if you want your kids to have a good education. I can get into the reasons why I feel that way offline via PM if you want...

Statistically the AZ schools rank low. Sure there are good schools within the system, but overall our education system ranks very low.

I just didn't know where you get the idea that "noone (no one) around here reads".

Do you really want me to go digging for the actual stats? You can look for the schools - I can look for libraries, and we can have a duel right here on allnurses! The AIM reading standards are a watered-down joke and AZ students score pathetically low, there was no statewide reading initiative launched until 2001, and there was vociferous opposition to funding libraries during the recent Phoenix bond initiatives.

I'm glad you read. Really, I am.

Thanks for all the info guys, I may well be picking your brains in the years to come re schooling.

I'm missing the desert, found great house to buy in New River now just need to sell my soul to buy it lol

Real estate market is going through a downward trend - or rather, on the cusp of one. Maybe hold on a bit more and see where the prices go???? That is what we are doing - but, we have yet to find our dream home!

Sorry if I come across as snippy. I guess it's just because I'm from here, yet I hear so many people complain about here, although there are TOO MANY people here! lol

On one hand I think they need to raise the housing prices a lot higher and stop building because this is NUTS. There are way too many people here and it's just getting worse and worse. I mean I remember when Queen Creek was all dirt and farms. Now look at it. Too many people. Everyone is coming here for the nice weather and the cheap housing. Then you have someone like me that's lived here forever and I'd really like to buy a house, but it's getting too expensive. But like was mentioned, it's starting to become a buyer's market .... which is good news for me but bad news for us in general because that means even more people will be coming here!

Whew, sorry about all that.

And the AIMS is a joke, the whole thing. The government has sat on their butts for years and haven't done a dang thing as far as standardized testing, but now they decide they need to get their act together. So they force all teh high school students to pass the test or they won't graduate. Well of course they're going to FAIL the AIMS because they've been in the miserable AZ education system all these years, which has done nothing to prepare them for the test. Standardized testing is good, but don't start with the high schoolers. Start with the elementary kids now and go from there. I feel sorry for the high schoolers that didn't pass this year, therefore not graduating. It's not their fault.

Wow, This thread gets a lot of action.

At first I was a little worried about the school system, however I know how my kids are and we spend alot of time doing extra homework and both my kids will work extra on there own. Both my children love school and really try hard to get great grades. Son has been on Honor roll since first grade, and daughter made it this year while in first grade.

We are coming down on the 19th for a face to face meeting and a chance to look around(can't wait).

Good Sam, Thunderbird and J.C.L all are interested however J.C.L is who we are meeting with.

Any info that you might have or heard of would be very much appreciated. We know that there is no perfect job, place or person. That is not want we want, we just want a place we can raise our children, and make a comfortable living. We also would not want to work for a place with a really bad reputation.

Any advice or tips on places to check out for renting would also be appreciated. We want to get a 4 bed if we take the position.

Also is there anything that we must see when we get there and any recomendations on someplace nice to eat.

Thanks in advance
