So I have decided to apply to WGU for the pre-licensure program in Houston Texas. I submitted my application to the school and the first step is transcript review to see what pre-reqs are missing. So I did that. It was only suppose to take a week but there was a problem with one of my transcripts (that did not work out in my favor). Anyhow, it took a total of 2 weeks. It turns out that I am missing 2 classes; Sociology and Microbiology. WGU suggested that I take them online through Straighterline. I did some research on Straighterline on AN and other internet sources and decided that I would take the Sociology with them but for Microbiology, I'm going to take it else where. The reviews for the Microbiology course through Straighterline were pretty bad and I don't want to take any chances. Straighterline is the cheaper option but not the best for this class.
For Micro, I took the advice of a couple others on here and I am going through EDUKAN. They are significantly more expensive (I think the class totals to $865). But the lab is online and they have excellent reviews from other students who have taken the class and it is a 8 week course. I think it's a good investment for peace of mind.
I have already paid for my Sociology class and will start it today. It's self paced and I hope to finish in in under 1 month. Micro starts on Jan 17.
Im excited! This is my journey to nursing school!
Congrats!! It was exciting for me to read that you were accepted, I can't even imagine how awesome that must have felt for you! The letter was sent fairly quickly as well; did it say how many other people applied at the same time?I plan on submitting my application in May; I only have two classes to finish and then my checklist will finally be complete! Do you have any tips as far as making your application stand out?
When are you starting clinicals? I've heard various scenarios, some people say you start them early on while others say you basically finish most of your online classes and then do your clinicals towards the end of the program. Is it possible to have a full time job and participate in clinicals?
They didn't say how many people applied but I know that 12 people were accepted. I think that to make your application stand out, in your Letter of Intent, tell your story, be sincere and real. Tell them why you want to be a nurse, any struggles getting to this point and why you think WGU would be a good school for you.
I start clinicals in 3 weeks!! I'm nervous! The program is broken up into 6 month terms. The 1st semester you have 1 lab that covers some of the basics. Clinical Rotations start in the 2nd semester ( the 2nd month of that 6 month term).. which is technically the 8th month of the program.
I think it is possible to have a full time job if you have good time management skill and determination. I worked full time for the 1st semester but I'm going to be going part time soon. I just rather have more time to study rather than trying to cram it in the little time I have after work. You do have to have a job that is flexible because clinical rotations happen every 8 weeks for a 2 week time period. It's 5 shifts total in those 2 weeks the 2nd term but later some of the rotations have more hours to complete
