Starting Emory nursing school for the Fall 07

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hello,

I am so excited about starting Emory nursing school in the fall. I'm coming to Georgia from Louisiana so I hope that it isn't too much of a culture shock . Is anyone else headed to Emory in the fall? Any advice about anything would be great from anyone ;) !!!!

HA! I'm the slacker! I haven't gotten any of my stuff back to Student Health Services yet. My advisor gave me an extension until the first day of orientation so that works. I still need my physical! Speaking of resumes, I had no resume. I have been a stay at home mom for 8 years. I just had a really good GPA and a essay that brought tears to the eyes of many ha ha.Yes, that thing they sent us in email. OMG!!!! One module takes an hour or so. There's a bloodborne pathogens module too. I can't bring myself to do any of it yet. My kids go back to school on Wednesday so I want to handle that stuff first. I started on the HIPAA one and got to page 6 of 39 and decided that if I continued I would end up alseep on my keyboard. Anyway...off to my part time job for a nice break. Who knew work could be so fun!

HAHAHAHA... I don't even know who my advisor is. I think I got you beat :rotfl:

My financial aid was good but not GREAT. I already have a degree so there is money out there that I can't get because its for 1st time college students who don't have degrees.

VERY IMPORTANT: I was in this same boat- you are eligible for service cancellation on your Stafford and Perkins Loans but you must ask for this specifically. I got a LOT of loans forgiven this way- I just work in the state of GA after graduation, which I was planning on doing anyway. Ask your financial aid adviser.

Amytheodd,

Hey I had two quick questions. Should I buy my books now or wait for school to start? Also, it seems like they are really pushing this PDA thing. I own one but should I try to actually use it in class or will it be more trouble than what it is worth?

Thanks

Wait for a few more weeks and try to pick up books from seniors (I actually have a few I could get rid of, I'll look around. Remind me!) What you can't get from seniors, try to buy online. Also, decide yea or nay on PDA first, since you won't need the e-book and hardcopy if you go PDA.

I REALLY use my PDA! Mostly in clinical, but outside too. I have Tabers on it, and free drug and lab guides so I didn't need to buy those. Its AWESOME for checking drug interactions! Plus, my drug guide is updated each time I sync my PDA, can't say that for the hardcopy version!

I use it for reference, and DEFINITELY my schedule- nursing students are BUSY! I don't take notes on it or anything- but I do use Microsoft OneNote 2007 on my laptop to take notes- HIGHLY recommended. I've written posts about it before you could probably search for. It has saved my rear MANY times.

PS- the e-book of the nursing books I've bought have always been the same price or no more than $5 more than the hard copy version- and don't bank on getting used nursing books if you don't get them from seniors. I never see them in bookstores. No one sells them til they take the NCLEX and by then youre on to the next edition!

Did you see the thread about book debinding? I am quite interested in that. Amytheodd, what is your opinion on the debinding thing?

I'm not a fan. I like my books to stay all in one piece! I don't carry them around too terribly much, study a lot at home! I've heard of that too, but I actually don't know of anyone who does that.

Thanks Amytheodd...tell me this...I plan to work in the state of Georgia also, but I am not a Georgia resident yet. I wonder if that will have any effect.

Good news! I'm not a Georgia resident either, so apparently not! :wink2:

Ok..hold the bus from running over the old man. :barf02: This is new info for me b/c at the open house they were saying that there was Georgia Can. Loans but you had to be a Georgia resident. So if these are Stafford Loans that you are getting forgiven then I need to know all the details. Sometimes I feel like my financial aid advisor doesn't like me very much:smackingf

I moved to GA in Jan 2006, started nursing school in Aug 2006, had loans canceled my very first semester.

I've learned this about Emory financial aid: you can't just be a squeeky wheel, you have to be the squeekiest wheel. And FYI- everyone in the financial aid office will have a different answer for you, no matter the question. Keep trying, someone will get sick of you and decide to help you just to make you go away.

Perhaps I've discovered your difficulty? Being a young girl that can cry at will helps a lot. :lol2: I'm an independent, confident, ball busting woman, but when it came down to watching my dream die right before my eyes after I quit my job and moved here from another state, honey, I wasn't above crying for financial aid.

You think your financial aid advisor hates you? Mine sent me an email this summer saying she'd handed me over to someone else, best of luck- don't email her ever again :lol2:

this is what my financial aid advisor sent to me:

its called a service cancellable loan, we get a certain amount of money each year from the state. you get put on a waiting list if you are interested in them and we contact you when we get notified of our funds and if you high enough on the wait list. you can go to www.gacollege411.com and look up more information about them but you have to be a resident and work for three years to qualify. its not in addition to your aid but will replace some of your unsub, the max award is $2000 per year.

but when i read the info on the website, there were several other options. i dunno.

AMY! One more question! Do we have to disrobe and practice skills on fellow students? If we do I will just quit right now thank you very much. :lol2:

that is consistent with what i was told about applying. if you get it this year, you'll already be on the list for next year which is how i already know about mine. don't know what to tell you, i have a $4500 unsub service cancellable loan and a $4000 perkins converted to nursing service cancellable this year.
