Starting in Correctional Nursing- TOMORROW!

Published

Oh my! I got the job and they wanted me to start ASAP so tomorrow after my regular day nursing job, I start my orientation. I will be working strictly part time.

This is a smallish county facility (roughly 150 beds) where the nurses are well protected and NEVER left alone with an inmate.

Any advice for a newbie in this field?

Any advice for a newbie in this field?

Congratulations

I am a newbie in this field too, a whole month of experience in a large county (10,000 inmates) infirmary. The only advice I have is read the "yellow book" The Games Criminals Play and to treat your patients like patients.

I'm waiting for clearance from IDOC to hear when I can go in for my drug test and start working. I have been out of work for 4 weeks now and am looking forward to bring a paycheck home. My husband really doesn't want me to work at a prison but after my last job, if you weren't in the inner brown nose circle, you were out. I thought there was a nursing shortage but not according to this hospital. We weren't treated very good and didn't even get time and a half for holiday pay. Keep me posted, I'm anxious to hear about how it is. The prison I'm applying for is a Max 5, 2800 male felons. Good luck!:smokin:

I just wanted to let you all that I have been working the corrections job part time and I absolutely LOVE it! I am never alone without a CO there with me, and the place is small. I know several inmated from the outside from being so involved in my kids lives and volunteering in the schools and other community projects to help youth. The inmates are respetful and grateful to be treated like people.

This is a second job for me and atually pays more than my primary OR training job, but will never become my mainstay. BUT I could see myself doing this part time for many years to come.

Thanks to all on here for sharing (I read TONS before considering this job), as I am grateful I did not just assume how this job would be.
