Starting Class for CNA in Jan.

Hey Everyone,

I guess this isn't anything more but me venting my nervousness so if you want, you may continue reading. :nailbiting:

So I'm seventeen and gonna be turning eighteen next Feb. and I decided to start my nursing career. My CNA Class starts in January of 2015 and I'm already having a heart attack! Everyone is telling me that this class is really easy and that I'm going to do really well but I suppose being nervous is a good thing? I've always gravitated towards healthcare since I've been really young (I'm talking 6 & 7) and was watching knee replacement and hysterectomies by ten years old. :***: My Mother has been a Patient Care Technician for 35 yrs. and has a ton of experience in bedside care so she's definitely a good person to learn from. I always wanted to grow up and be exactly like my Mother and now that the time is here I am literally flipping out! lol...Call me overly anxious but I can't help it. :whistling:

Is there anything I need to know before entering this course? Any tips that some of you RN's/LVN's/CNA's can give to a beginner? Would love to hear some input from you guys! :)

I just started nursing school for my BSN. We just went over basic CNA skills and honestly you will be fine trust me. It isn't too hard if you put effort in and pay attention.

Pay attention to details, remember you will be the nurses eyes and ears at times. Treat each pt with dignity and compassion. The skills are easy and can be learned by anyone willing to do so, it's the heart that makes or breaks a good nurse

Hey Thomas my name is kory I'm a cna also. I did a vo tech when I was in high school and got my cna certificate at the age of 18 which was also my senior year! you are going in the right direction. My advice to you is to pay attention and study hard, because what ever you go over in class could end up on your nurse aide exam (written) so on spare time just take some time out to go over some notes. Please learn the abbreviations!!! Just take it very seriously and treat each patient with the most respect. some nurses are so grouchy.

You are right, the class is not hard. I took my CNA course at a local community college. I got an A in it. The information is very basic but the skills are the ones you want to master. During your clinical, you will see other CNAs do a skill differently than what your school tells you and what you state board of nursing tells you. Make sure you follow what the school and state tells you because this will be the skill you will be tested on during you board certification.

I'm just letting you know this because in the actual field CNAs don't follow the lengthy steps because there isn't time.
