Starting Capstone Next Week!!

Published

Just finished up Leadership and Management as well as Co-op. I can't believe this long journey is almost over. I started in October 2013 - so 11 months to the finish line isn't too bad! Good luck to everyone next semester!

Awesome! How many pre reqs did you have to do. I feel like I have a million :(

I'm starting capstone 8/12 as well.

Here's hoping for a quick 5 weeks!

I can't speak for krazylady, but I had a ton of prereqs to do. My Associate's didn't require much and what they requires was different from what UTA wants for a BSN. The end result is that I had lots and lots of prereqs.

I started in in beginning of 2011 and I'm finishing Sept 2013. I doubled up when it made sense, but I didn't double up on the hardest courses. Had a full time job and then some, and still made time for going on vacation and being a parent. It's doable.

My advice is to not bite off more than you can chew. I work with a nurse who was in a similar situation to me in regards to having a lot of prereqs. She decided she was going to take 2 at a time at UTA and also one at the local CC so she could get done as quick as humanly possible. She passed her courses but her GPA suffered and she burnt-out completely. She decided to take a semester off which has turned into about a year and a half now. If she had just taken one, maybe two courses at a time, then she would probably be graduating now.

Thanks for that post. I work 2 part time jobs and a single mom of a 10 year old. I took one class this summer and that was more than enough for that time. I try 2 every 8 weeks. Those histories will be by itself!

I only had to take American Gov't and Texas Gov't. I have a BS degree in Business Management, so luckily I already had taken most of the non-nursing courses. I did double up nursing courses a couple of times, and I really don't recommend it. It fried my brain!

Hi krazylady,

I'll be in Capstone with you. Hard to believe that in just a few weeks, we will be DONE!! I don't have a feel for what is in store for us in Capstone, but I assume that since there isn't much posted here on allnurses, that it must be an okay class. Thanks for starting this forum. I'll check in here next week.

I have heard it isn't too bad. I understand the work builds on the previous weeks (like other classes) and works towards the final project. Everyone states it is pretty easy, but I imagine it must be time consuming, since it is a 5 credit class.

Good luck!

Aww, I initially signed up for capstone for 8/12, now I have to start on 9/23 because I have to take college algebra for the entire fall semester! Not too happy about that!

I just got accepted and only have to take algebra as the 9 nursing course (thanks to my previous BA and nursing school requirements). I want to be done in less than a year and am thinking of doubling up on classes. I work full-time but have no children so hopefully I can do it!!

I have 15 total courses to take. I have completed 5. I have doubled and tripled up the entire time. Doubling up is fine with me, and I am able to manage a social life, work and school with very minimal relaxation time. I also tripled up all summer and was able to get A's in all courses while working 60-65 hour weeks but I will say I had to sacrifice going to the gym and healthy, home-cooked dinners to do it. I think doubling is most realistic. Try to plan ahead. Wrote down all of the courses I needed along with their start times and figured out my summer and fall schedule in a do-able way back in April. I will finish in about 11-13 months depending on course offering times. Again, you could triple, but with the wrong classes together (history, assessment, research for example) you may die. That being said, I feel as if health promotion was so easy that you could easily triple that up with an easier nursing course and an elective. History wasn't hard but just was lots of work and the due dates fall all over the week which kind of sucks for people like me so want to sit down on the weekend and get it done in one shot. I don't have kids but I have a dog and when I tripled up his walks got a bit shorter ;-)

Hi MBrickle,

You have some very valuable info here that could be helpful to those just starting the program. This forum is for those of us who are starting Capstone next week so we don't really need to think about doubling and tripling up classes anymore . Thank God! Maybe you could copy and paste your post into a forum that could be read by students taking the early classes. I'm sure they would benefit from your experience.

P.S. I hope you gave your dog some extra treats to make up for the short walks.
