credentials for the professional nurse: determining a standard order of credentials for the professional nurse - 12/11/09

in the nursing profession, the use of credentials is an essential component to designate levels of attained education and licensure, certification, and professional achievement. the listing of credentials when identifying a nurse ensures credibility and competence to the consumers of nursing care. standardized use strengthens a unified understanding of credentials among nurses, within the healthcare delivery system, and for healthcare consumers. in an effort to establish a recognizable and understandable credential usage process across all spectrums of nursing, the following order of credentials is recommended: highest earned degree, mandated requirements (i.e. licensure), state designations or requirements, national certifications, awards and honors, other certifications.

Informative article.

Does this also apply to highest degree earned other than in nursing? (ie AAS, BAAS,)

For instance, would an RN write

Maria, BSCS,RN or an LPN write

Maria, BS,LPN

confusing :uhoh3::eek::uhoh3::eek::uhoh3:

Nursing is the only profession that puts all those credentials in anyway. I think it can be overdone. Other professionals I have known will only insert what is pertinent to the audience. I have several degrees and certs now, but I finally just started signing my name with RN only and drop the RN on correspondence since the credentials are part of my letterhead. ANA is focused on RN's, so an LVN association would have to advise you on your credentials. Glad to see you are trying to do the appropriate thing!

After how many does it just look silly?
