St. Thomas University (STU) - Miami - PMHNP program

Has anyone completed the PMHNP program at STU? I read a lot of past negative reviews and would like some feedback: 

  1. How was the course organizations?
  2. I read that exams don't make sense from what is studied?
  3. Professors are not helpful?
  4. Difficult to find preceptors?
  5. Exit exam was it difficult?
  6. Was the board just as difficult as NCLEX?
  7. Any tips or helpful feedback is appreciated!

I am completing core courses in this program and there has been one bad experience. The class I'm currently in, I am getting little to no instruction. The exams come from 2 books that seem to have conflicting information. I am hearing that not all of the professors are instructing in this way.

I just started the FNP program in June. Not the same program, but the core courses are the same. 
 

I finish my first half term at the end of the month. I don't see how anyone can fail these classes. As long as you don't miss deadlines, the syllabus are equally weighted with papers and weekly discussions - which are easy A's if you read what's expected/follow guidelines and help boost your grade if you have lower test scores.
I still see people submitting discussions formatted incorrectly and the Professor has sent announcements before and after each one has been due for the last four weeks. So that's on them. 

As of right now, all work is due Thursday and Sunday for both my classes. Makes it easy to stay on top of things. 

The program is self guided. So the teachers are not teaching. The syllabus and announcements have everything you need to know (if you actually read it. I skipped over it because it's just so long, but everything is in there). Modules have additional resources, and of course you need your book. 
 

I haven't gotten to the point where I'm looking for a preceptor or getting a site approved. From what I've read, it's not easy. But again, I read that these classes would be a disaster and they are not. 
 

I am looking for more detailed information about clinical-everything if anyone has any insight/tips. 
 

Also, financial aid representative has been very helpful and fast in her responses and my advisor reaches out frequently to follow up on my experience.

Hello everyone! 

Just like many of you I am tempted to do the FNP program at St Thomas University.
 

Anyone has any updates as far as this program?  From what I read it used to be horrible but they have gotten better? I'm looking at other schools but most of them are very competitive, and I honestly don't want to waste time applying and waiting for answers 😞  I live in Palm Beach so I like the idea of being kind of close in case I need to go in person? But I am scared and I don't want this experience to end up being a nightmare. 
 

Any advice?

I was hesitant too. It's been great. Everything is laid out, extremely straight forward. Everyone answers emails and phone calls - which was not the case in my RN program. Teachers respond within minutes to your emails, as well as administrators. It gets a little rough around clinicals managing the hours with the weekly requirements, but also I think I just got used to the ease of only online work. Regardless all the teachers have actually been there to help you learn and not just fail you if you've made a mistake. Maybe my expectations were very low going in, but I've been pleasantly surprised.

I am in the very last class for the PMHNP program.  It is horrible  They do not teach they tell you to read the syllabus and the required reading.  I literally had one professor tell the class in the zoom eeting that he is not hear to teach us the books and material are for that. he also said if we ask a question and he feels it has been addressed in the material he will not answer you.  The program director is HORRIBLE.  She does the last to classes . [MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME] When you ask her questions she refuses to answer.  such as "what is wrong with my APA format that you deduct points.  She reples with a website for us to figure it out.  Its weird because I have used the same program for both of her classes and sometimes she takes off points and other times she doesnt.  

 

They take forever yo get bac to you.  They have an exit exam that has probably 35-40% FNP questions.  makes no sense.  STAY AWAY.  I regret going here

You are extrmeley lucky.  This has not been the experience of ANYONE in my cohort or the one before me.

I don't know how to respond to each of you separately...sorry, I don't come on this site often.

But I wanted to thank you for taking the time to reply my post. I am starting to think that it comes down to luck. It seems that some instructors are okay, while others don't even bother to teache or even respond emails. Frustrating, and unfair.
 

I have been looking at others online programs but most of them require multiple letters of recommendations from Nurse Practitioners or doctors and that's something that unfortunately I can't provide. The last 7 years I have worked on Home Health so the truth is that I have learned to be very independent, I don't really know many doctors anymore, and they don't know me much either since I'm out on the field. So good recommendation letters would be hard for me to obtain 😞

As of right now I'm leaning towards St Thomas..I just hope and pray that everything goes smooth if I end up choosing them...

Run RUN RUN!   School is horrible.  I graduated but not with the help of the teaching staff there.  We had to form a WhatsApp group and teach each other.  Grading is inconsistent.  The professors will change how they grade from week to week and if you point it out they tell you "you're in a masters program".  Also they can take weeks to grade weekly posts which sucks because of you don't format it the way they want you can three or four weeks without knowing. 
 

 

They dropped a required review course on us the last two weeks and expect you to pay $700 for it.   It was not part of the original curriculum.  If you mention this the response is "you're in a masters program".  
 

 

I had one professor tell the class in the preterm zoom meeting "I am not hear to teach you.  That's what the books are for.   If you ask me a question about something that can be found in the books I will not respond.”   Near exact words.  They are unorganized and worry more about you cheating than they do about teaching you.  I learned more about being an NP in my chosen review course than I did in the entire program.  So sad.  I promise I am not the only one. We had about 50 students in our group chat in all different levels in the program.  Same complaint.
