1st semester - buy new or used?

I have been told to buy my textbooks now, because I have about 9 chapters to read PRIOR to the first day...

My thought is, should I 'splurge' and buy them new or can I buy them online used? My only concern with buying them online and used is that they will be in poor condition and already completely highlighted etc.

Any great book websites from anyone that has bought some used would be really appreciated!

some of my requirements include: handbook of nursing diagnosis (9th), calculation of drug dosages (6th), fundamentals of nursing (6th), mosby's medical/nursing/dictionary (6th)...etc...etc...etc...

I'm all for saving money, just hesitant that I will regret it if they are in bad condition.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks tounchitoRN, I will take that advice!

ecampus is mostly where i have gotten used books and they have been well worth ordering ahead of time. i have yet to even get a book with highlighting and have save anywhere from 40-70% over campus book store prices.

i even found my $100 med/surg book for the bargin price of $9.99 :D

ask for a book list complete with ISBN number from your nursing program secretary and order them at least 6 weeks in advance. gives you plenty of time to order them and still have time to read over before classes start.

good luck! :)

Check out Books A Million -- http://www.bamm.com

They seem to have the lowest prices for NEW books & free shipping on orders over $25---which as we all know---99.99% of all nursing books cost over $25...lol. You get a 10% discount if you become a millionaire member which costs $5 a year. Not bad.

I also found Textbookx.com which sometimes has some good deals.

you can always borrow from the library....I don't have any of my undergrad books anymore. Some of my required graduate books were a bunch of rubbish too. I did buy almost all of them except the ones that weren't available. I AM SO GLAD I didn't buy them all. Having said that buying used can be a money saver especially since most books are 'gently used'.

I use ecampus and amazon.com and save a ton of money! Also, you can sell back some of the books you aren't going to use again (from those fluffy classes like Alternative therapies) and make some of your money back!

Here is a website that places the books at your disposal by all the listed book web pages by best price. I hope you are able to save where you can.
