1st, 2nd, 3rd shifts? 12 hour evening shifts?

Published

Hi guys I'm a new grad and was wondering what exactly 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts were in a hospital the where the RNs work 12 hour shifts. I'm assuming 7a-7p for 1st, 7p-7a as 3rd, but I don't know what 2nd is.

Also, do 12 hour evening shifts exist? If so, what hours are they?

1st,2nd and 3rd shifts only occur in facilities where staff work 8 hour shifts.

Its 7a-3p, 3p-11p, and 11p-7a.

When you do 12 hour shifts, there are only two. 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am.

Have never heard of any 12 hour evening shift anywhere.

^^Okay thanks that's what I was thinking. It's strange though becuase the nurse recruiter asked if if I'd prefer 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift. She then proceeded to say RNs work 12 hour shifts.

I think you should ask the recruiter. It would be very interesting to discover there is actually a 12 hour evening shift.

perhaps they have a 3p-3a shift that they consider second. I know we have that in our ER. We also have an 11a-11p shift. That way there is always extra help during the usual busy times.

In California, most nurses in hospitals only have option to work 12 hour shifts....6a-6p, 12-12a, or 6p-6a.....There could be different alternatives.. What state are you in??

In the ER where I work we have 7a-7p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, 1p-1a, 5p-5a, 7p-7a

I'm in the Cincinnati area.

Wow, that's pretty impressive! Never heard of so many shifts. Personally, I'd stick to nights.

I'm not in Cinci (I'm in central OH) but some of our hospitals have 3p-3a and 11a-11p in addition to the usual 7-7 shifts.

I work what is considered the 12 hour evening shift at my facility, 11A-11P. Personally, I really like the shift. I am not an early morning person, so I don't have to go during the early morning hours. I understand that these hours do not suit everyone though. For me, it really suits my lifestyle and allows me to at least have the same sleep schedule as my family.
