I don't know anything about the ICU. The hospital is in a very bad part of town. I would guess that 80% of your patients will be Spanish speakers only. It is owned by IASIS which doesn't really have a good reputation for being nurse friendly.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that you're an ICU RN as well. Can you refer me to any good ICU's that are looking for RN's? I've been an ICU RN for the past 3 years and am relocated in about a week and a half. Thanks!

Banner is always looking for experienced people. IN fact, so is every hospital in town. Start your job hunt based on where you are living.

I've done exactly that! I'm so frustrated right now. I've been applying to numerous hospitals and have had only a couple of calls. I don't know if it's because I'm still in MI or if they are looking for someone with more experience? I'm really just baffled. St. Lukes is the only hospital that's given me ANY positive feedback and they're not really close to where I'll be living. Close enough..but Mercy Gilbert would be closer and I've had NO luck with them or with Banner. Ugh...I'm just slightly angered by the whole process. I would like to think that most hospitals would at least call and interview before turning you down for a position. Funny thing is....that's not the case. I've applied for 5 or 6 positions at Banner and have been overlooked for each position. I didn't even get a phone call for an interview. What in the world are they looking for???

Sorry...I sound like I'm whining. I don't mean to...it's just the job market here in MI is much different. You can pretty much walk into any hospital and have job offers thrown at you. ESPECIALLY if you have at least 2 years experience.

I'm hanging in there...just confused and disillusioned at the moment. I'll keep trying though. Thanks for the help.

You have more than enough experience to get almost any ICU job here in town. The problem is the HR people. Mercy Gilbert will post positions that aren't even available, and will never ever call for an interview. What you have to do to get a job here is actually call the unit managers after you've applied online (or even before sometimes). I've been in the job market during the last month and have turned in over 25 applications, a couple of people have called me back, but most of the positions I applied for are still in limbo land. I finally called the manager of the job I REALLY wanted, and she didn't even have my resume, HR never sent it up. I told her a bit about myself, she scheduled an interview the next day, and I walked out of the interview with the job I wanted. You have to be pretty aggressive about getting a job here. Every job I've gotten in the medical field in Phx I've had to call the manager directly to schedule an interview.

Have you tried St. Joes? They have a huge ICU unit and they always need people. I'm not sure where you're going to live, if you're looking in Gilbert St. Joes is a bit of a drive, but worth it for the experience you'll get. There's a hospital in Gilbert called Gilbert Emergency Hospital that is supposed to be opening an ICU unit. I've heard they treat their people great, it's doctor owned and very supportive of the staff. Banner Good Sam seems to always have openings, but I've heard they like to hire new grads. Have you thought about starting out as a traveler and that way you can see the different hospitals and figure out where you want to work before you commit to one?

Good luck, and welcome to Phx

Banner is notoriously slow at calling for interviews. They are really short staffed in the HR department. Any time they have called me for an interview it's about 2 weeks after I have already found a job!

Check St. Joes. It's the biggest hospital in the state with 600+ beds and they are always looking for nurses. Same with Maricopa Medical Center.

Thank you for this helpful information. I had no idea! Funny thing is someone from Chandler Regional called to set up an interview for their CVICU today. So at least I'm getting somewhere! Thanks for the help, I'm definitely going to be more aggressive and see if I can get somewhere. I'll keep you posted. Enjoy the weekend!
