Spring 2012 UH Manoa BSN Applicants

U.S.A. Hawaii

So who else is anxious to hear back from the nursing dept!

Hey guys don't give up hope because it is totally possible to get into UHM and not get accepted by KCC. I work with a nurse that got rejected by KCC and Manoa accepted him. So don't give up yet!

Yay, that's good to here! Do you know if that was like yeeeears ago, or kinda recent? I didn't get into KCC thats why :( I'm trying to keep my hopes up for Manoa

I think 4-5 years ago. So not really recent but not really a long time ago either. You never know... Hope it works out for you, me, and everyone else that's waiting for UHM acceptance letters!!!!

I know. UH nursing dept said those getting in have 120's for NLN. My problem is that my bachelor's gpa was bad. I had to work a full time job, part-time job and attend class full time (12+ hours) every semester to get done. I didn't have the time needed to get good grades in my organic chemistry, immunology, cellular/molecular biology, physics... so my grades suffered. I'm in a total different position now and have all A's in A&P I & II, pharm, Micro...so hopefully they see the change in me! All current A's, 2.5years as a lab assistant and phlebotomist in a hospital, and a 144 NLN should count for something though...right? we'll see

Hi Jaybyrd09,

Did the counselor at UHM specifically said the GPA from before can cause serious damage on your application?? I have never talk to a counselor there about it and happen to be in the same boat as you are. I have most As for pre-req and co-req, decent NLN, working experience but a horrible cumulative GPA thanks to my previous bachelor. I believe I barely made the 2.5 requirment...This is the first time I apply UHM. I have been always intimidated to do so because of my past...Seen from one of the posts here saying the results are being sent out...figure crossed!

Hi Jaybyrd09,

I went to a session at UHM and Brian, the admission specialist, said that he looks at trends and unusual activity from your transcripts. If you have trends such as A LOT of withdrawals with a "W" in previous semesters then that could raise a red flag. He could be mistaken but it kinda seems like the student has a tendency to withdraw from classes. It's fine if the withdrawal is a hardship one such as a death in the family or an illness that results in long hospital stay. If the withdrawal shows in back to back semesters, which is a result of not being able to handle the class, then the warning signs are waved. Brian and the committee don't want someone who have a tendency of withdrawing from classes. If the student is accepted into the nursing program, that tendency to withdraw from classes could roll over into the semesters when he/she is in the nursing school facing even HARDER classes. It's a given that the nursing classes are hard...we can see it in these forums from nursing students themselves. We can also see the hard classes in our own pre-req classes. Zoology, microbiology, chemistry...and other science classes are like new languages. Lots of new terms, definitions, and jargon that a student must learn. If you can't do well in the pre-req classes and withdraw from them, then how much more when you're taking medsurg, pathophys, and other complex nursing classes?

Another case that Brian said could raise a red flag is a student who withdrawals from hard classes yet keeps a semi-easy class, but acquires a low grade for the semi-easy class he/she kept. For example, if a student takes zoology 141/141L, eng 100, famr 230, and math 100...he/she then decides to drop the other 3 classes and keeps math 100, but gets a C-. How will that look? Kinda iffy don't you think?

Personally, I have withdrawals in my previous semesters. They were for classes like chem 161 and astronomy 110. I feel kinda stupid dropping them when I thought I wasn't gonna do well. I should've stuck it out and put in more effort to at least get a C. It might/might not hurt my application but I'm gonna apply no matter what. My overall gpa is a about 3.4 (KCC and LCC gpa that can be transfered not factored in). I owe it to the language classes that take up 4 credits each :) 16 credits with A's increase your gpa a lot. Well, I know that we don't need language for nursing but hey I needed classes while waiting to apply. Plus it's really fun to learn a new language. hehe.

Anyways, good luck to ya'll that are waiting for acceptance letters. I really hope you guys get in so that I won't have to compete with you during fall 2012. I hope this because your stats look WAYYY better than mine. haha :p

Hey guys. I just my rejection letter :(.

I hope you guys the best. Only 55 applicants were accepted :(.

Don't give up servealoha! Keep trying. I know you will get in!

To my great surprise, I received my provisional acceptance letter today. They just need to receive my grades for Chem 151 that I am taking this semester. I nearly fell down on my knees and cried right by the mailbox. Keep an eye out everyone! Your letter should be coming soon. I wish everyone the best of luck!

Congratulations, jujubees1!!

Just curious, did yours come in a packet or just like a regular letter?

I, sadly, didn't get into UHM ;( I'm gonna keep trying tho! Good luck to everyone!

Keep trying hcs808. The new program for KCC sounds really good. It would be a great way to save money and you would have your RN before you get to UH. I kinda wish I could go that route but it would take me even longer as I would have to redo my science classes as they are expired for KCC. Luckily, they were not expired for UH.

I received my letter in a regular envelope. It was a little thicker though as it had other paperwork that I need to turn in. I have to let them know by Nov. 18 if I accept or not and also send in $200 as a deposit if I do accept. I am going to do it on Mon. so I don't forget!

Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations jujubess1!

Yeah, I'm gonna keep trying :) I'll get there sooner or later lol. But if you don't mind me asking, what were your stats when you applied?

Thank you aukei04.

hcs808,

My stats are:

pGPA: 4.0

cGPA: 3.5

NLN:

Science: 93

Math: 97

Verbal: 97

I did apply to MEPN, though, for Fall 2011 and I didn't get it. I think my bachelor's GPA was too low. They didn't count my post-BA classes/grades. I was crazy with my BA and took 6 classes each semester, full load during summers and worked while doing a double major. I wish I would have paid attention to my GPA back then. I think I rushed just to finish college. Sigh...:bluecry1:

Keep trying. You will get there. Don't give up. I was so discouraged but figured I would try for UH's BSN program. :)

Congratulations to those who got in. Be prepared to work hard. There's down time and time for work or fun, but exams and paper due dates have a tendency to bunch up. Just as you're breathing a sigh of relief after turning in a paper or finishing up an exam, another due date is breathing down your back. And eventually, you'll have to forget about reading. After a while, it becomes very focused--as in for exam prep--because you have so much other stuff to do. Have fun with APA =). Be ready for lots of group projects, too. Nursing school is very time consuming. If you thought prereqs were tough, I have to say that nursing school is tougher.

If you didn't get in, don't give up. Use the time to improve your grades, improve your NLN score, or finish up other classes required for graduation. Use it as an opportunity to beef up on your writing, A&P, and pharm. Take a CNA class, if possible. It'll only cover a few basic skills, but they go kind of fast when it comes to skills. At least you won't have to worry about learning some skills during the first few weeks of school. Also, get some APA templates going as writing in APA style is very tedious. They ask for all your papers to be written using APA format.
