Spring 2014 NAU Hopefuls

Published

I figured I'd start this since there wasn't one yet, even though it's pretty early!

I just took the Kaplan test today and got an 85% overall and have a 3.95 GPA. What do you guys have?

Since there are no letters of recommendations needed or experience this year, I'm nervous that our admittance is just based on our Kaplan score and GPA! Anyone else nervous about that?

I'm going to submit my application soon since everything is done!

I'm not sure about competitiveness of each location. I did read on this site that Yuma is the least competitive, but I don't actually know. I'm in the Tuscon program, I applied with Tucson as my first choice and Flagstaff as my second. I was fortunate to get in on the first time applied, but it is true that they take into consideration the number of times you apply and if you're applying for a second time, it improves your chances. I got in with a 3.6 GPA and an 82 on the Kaplan, so it's possible with lower stats. However, I know from reading on here, it really varies from semester to semester depending on who applies. Don't let other people discourage you. I didn't think I'd get in on the first try with my stats and I did! Also, only 1 person in my cohort attended NAU before getting in, so for the extended campuses at least, I don't think they take much f that into account.

I applied for Flagstaff and Yuma as well=) I scored a 90 on the science section, but my overall score is abysmal. I am finishing up my last prerequisite this semester, so that is nice=) If I don't get accepted this time around, I will regroup and apply for Yuma as my first pick. I need to brush up on my math and writing skills as those sections are bringing down my overall score. Best of luck everyone!=)

Hello amd23, do you attend the SNA meeting by any chance? I am at the Flagstaff campus=)

I unfortunately missed the SNA meeting as I had to work. I'm at the Tucson campus though and we have a separate SNA!

Oops sorry I should have paid attention to your earlier posts. I heard Tucson is as competitive as Flagstaff.

I got a 74 overall on this last attempt=( the questions are not bad I just need to brush up on my math for next time. I applied to Flagstaff and Yuma as well=) My GPA is about the same and I am taking statistics right now. I hope I get accepted as well, but worry my overall score is too low. I am not liking stats all that much right now either:no:.

I am also applying for Tucson- Spring 2014.

Kaplan score was 80% overall and 90% science. GPA is 3.95- no classes in progress.

I thought the Kaplan exam was easy but confusing in certain spots. I assumed that the graduate level physiology, cellular bio and microbiology courses I took would have helped me, but I do not feel that they did. I agree with others that there is no way to study for the science section. For example,

Which of the following body systems regulates blood pressure?

A. Nervous system

B. Cardiovascular system

C. Urinary system

D. Endocrine system

I chose "C" but gee whiz Kaplan, each of those systems plays a role in regulation of blood pressure! The receptors in the kidneys (urinary) are located inside of arteries (cardiovascular) that signal for the release of renin and subsequent release of angiotensin (endocrine) and of course the brain (nervous) regulates all of those processes.

I found most of the science portion to be that way, but maybe I was just nervous

In any case, anyone interested can get a head start and Google "NAU course packs" and check out the syllabi for the Spring 2013 nursing courses. Of course, the syllabus will probably differ slightly, but it would not hurt to know the pacing and reading load that is required. I picked up the NUR205 nursing text and the NUR215 pharmacology text off Amazon- the amount of reading, as per the syllabus, is fairly daunting, but it would be pretty cool to have a head start!

If we don't get in on our first attempt, apply again and study physiology and pharmacology like crazy in the meantime. It will pay off.

Good luck everyone!

I applied as well. I hope we hear soon!

My friend applied recently (last semester I believe) and he said he got his letter around 4 weeks! So I'm hoping we don't have to wait the full 6 weeks. It's too stressful! But now that he said that, I realize we could get our letters in the next week which makes me even more stressed about it! haha

Not to burst your bubble, but it took the full 6 weeks last semester. Hopefully you guys don't have to wait that long cuz te wait is agonizing! Good luck to everyone.

I just sent an email to the coordinator in Tucson asking her when they would be making a decision. I have been accepted at another university but NAU is my first choice. I already had to go to an orientation for the other university.

She said the letters will come out the week before thanksgiving. That being said, I check my mailbox everyday!
