Sorry, I need generic research advice

You might try MedScape. But I think it is abstracts also.

Can you have the library pull the journals for you in advance? Univ of Kansas would do this for me (FREE), then I just copied what I needed. You still have to go to the main library, but then you're not there for hours and hours.

The main library may also copy the articles you need for a small fee (it's worth asking).

Ask your professor how to get this done, explain that the main library is 5 hours away. She may have some access to getting the articles you want at a less steep price.

For some of the articles, you may be able to make do with the abstracts (or you may be able to rule out based on the abstracts, which means fewer articles to copy).

If you know someone else in the bigger city, you might ask them to do this for you (I did it for other nursing students in my class since I worked for Univ of KS).

Or call the library and ask if the journals you want can be transferred to your branch for a couple of days. This option costs you nothing, but not every library will transfer.

You could try the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (published online by the ANA, peer reviewed, etc. - available free of charge).

I've had the same problem in the past. Then found out our school library hosts a site free of charge to it's students to get journal articles. You have to get the access code from the library after filling out a form. Maybe your school has something like this?

I know it doesn't help you now, but worth looking into for the future. I would help you out as I had the access code last semester, but they change it every semester and I haven't signed up for it again yet. Sorry, I hope you get what you need.

Until parameters are set by the instructors, which preclude the use of online or non-US journals, this will do. At least I'll get my assingments for this next week done. Thanks everyone.

I'll definitely be speaking with the instructors about the difficulties next week. It's really frustrating. I know that we can request hard copies or actual journals / books be ILL'd to our school, but there is a time concern as well as *finding* the article or journal we want, without being there to browse. I'm sure we'll work it out.

RN2BNC - our school's website says they have that, but it says to call the library for the password etc. I called, and was informed that they do NOT have a password / account for we lowly online folk (ok, they didn't actually SAY it that way), but that the ONLY way to access those sites are on the 4 terminals at the main branch library. WTF is the POINT, then???? ARGH.

Anyway, I'm over my little mini crisis for the weekend. I will address this further on Monday.

Well, having the site but no access code isn't very helpful. Who wants to go to the library and hope you can get a computer every time you need to research? Hope your instructors can find a solution.

The more I think about you having to go 5 hours to the library, the crazier it makes me!!! Your professors either need to announce topics early enough so that your journals can be shipped to your library, or they need to make other arrangements. That is ridiculous!

Thanks! Luckily, we *do* have the entire semester's topics in our hands. The problem was that the first report is due Wednesday (class just started last week) and that's not enough time to request and receive library loans. I'm sure it will be ok from here on out, I was just in panic mode after several hours of online searching.
