I am going to sound like a wuss and most likely am but...I transferred to a job in Wy and let me tell you something..IT IS COLD! I have only been hear a month and -12 is making me sick as a dog and exhausted. I have been offered a job in Wilmington NC but I am not sure how long I should stay here in WY before I can transfer? 3 most? 6 mos? I know HR did a lot to get me here and I don't want to get a bad reputation. Any advice?

I am not sure what part of WY you are in but I too am from WY and work within the VA system. Give WY a chance, yes the winters are very cold but the summers are beautiful. Where are you coming from? Remember you did just move to a new location so this could be the cause of your sickness. If it was me I would wait before transferring.

I believe it would and I hope this satisfies your curiosity

Whoa, this sounds rude. Please correct me if I am wrong. I asked that because this is a VA discussion board and everyone learns from these boards. I have not heard of getting an offer from a VA just after starting at another. If it happened to you, wonderful.

Tammy if I can remember right you should have signed a contract when you first started. Do you remember such a form? I know in my first post I said to stick it out and you should. You have been here for a short time and have not gave the state a chance. However, I believe that if you are truly unhappy you should speak with your manager as well as HR and let them know what is going on. Being sick all the time and being unhappy in a situation can lead to you not going to work which in return makes it hard on the unit due to them being short handed. I hope this helps.

It's a weird phenomenon, IMHO, that people will sometimes post on a message board asking for advice and input about a situation......and then slam the person who offered it to them. Sort of like "biting the hand that feeds you", y'know? And makes one cautious about offering to help again :(

I knew what you meant, original poster. Yes, "transfers" in any company I've worked in have to be applied for. Even if you are definitely getting the job, you still have to go through the application process. But people still call them "transfers." So anyway.... You don't have to wait before you apply for a new job within the VA.

So can you clarify? did you have to go all the way to Wyoming to Interview? Or did HR set you up with the job? I am curious how the transfer situation worked or did you have to apply all over again for VA job in WY?

Hi, karrikon....the OP hasn't posted since January, so not likely to respond, but maybe I can help.

Typically, VERY typically, interviews are by telephone. They don't expect you to travel to a distant State to interview unless you are one of the Top MuckyMucks :)

The process is simply to locate an available job via USAjobs.gov, and apply. You don't get a job without an application exactly the same as someone from outside VA. HR can definitely make it smoother by helping you get through it from the inside....but ultimately, you have to be selected for the job just like an outsider would. Sometimes, if you're a great employee with a great track record of performance evals from VA, it's way easier to get that job than an 'unknown' from the outside. If, of course, you're still not the best match for the job...it goes to the outsider.

They are always called 'transfers" but in reality, the only thing "transferring" is your personnel and employee health files. You are a "transfer" in that you keep your seniority, benefits, all that moves with you.

The other thing is that a job isn't created for an employee because they want to move/transfer to a different VA. That's a misconception, that you can "go anywhere". You CAN "go anywhere" there is an opening that you can fill :)

Does that help?
